I should point out that neither @gerrylum or I have any affiliation with Comma AI - we are just very passionate about the project and product. We aren't trying to "sell" anything. We're just trying to spread the passion. If I had a nickel for every.... ha ha ha....

Has the wheel torque issue been resolved?

And FWIW, I've never had that serious of an error with mine. I've not even had any of the more simple cruise control unavailable errors (that used to require a simple sleep cycle to fix) for months now. I've set my comma to always boot in "offroad mode" (which is what Comma confusingly calls the offline mode that essentially makes the device a passthrough and disables any control of the vehicle). I then manually just tap a button before each drive to take it out of "offroad" mode and haven't had any issues for the 3-4 months that I've been doing this.

We've found that tires make a huge difference - also the R1S has an advantage over the R1T due to the shorter wheelbase. The Pirellis appear to be one of, if not "the", worst option too. @gerrylum has a spreadsheet here - Optimizing Rivian Tire Selection for Best Openpilot Autosteering Performance · commaai/openpilot Wiki

Angle steering is still being worked on by a couple of devs so with any luck, we may see that in the near future. Even without it though, it's quite capable on torque steering.

Totally. Right now the 90-degree steering lockout is a much bigger issue than the steering torque.

I have a 3X with long upgrade in the Atlanta, GA area.

As far as the Kyle (Out of Spec) failure, I was a bit disappointed that they didn't take the time to do the widely recommended practice of separating the power for the Comma from the AXM power. I get trying with the standard Comma harness because that's what most would do without research, but after a failure, they should have tried the separating the power as widely recommended. As a tech oriented channel, it was lazy to just leave it as they did. They could have very easily tested separating the power and brought further attention to it.

I even talked to Kyle on the phone after it happened and recommended he do that. I think it's just not a high priority for thier channel.

Not sure what a test drive is going to do, if your this far down the rabbit hole, where you want to meet up and see how the car responds to a Comma driving, ill admit, you are already there and it's only a matter of time before you get one. It's hands down the best accessory available for the gen1 Rivians. I use this almost anytime I have to drive over 3-4 miles.

Comma Testimonials:

gerrylum

This is the best purchase I've made for my R1T. I use it every time I drive. Rivian may have abandoned Driver+, but Comma gives my truck a new lease on life.

LivingInKaos
After the 1300mi trip from this weekend, I don't know why anyone wouldn't use one. It makes the idea of upgrading to Gen 2 for AP+ a much lesser value.

DayTripping
If it wasn't for Comma.Ai, I'd seriously thinking about selling my G1 truck given how terrible Driver+ is. I had no idea it was so horrendous when I drove it. It seems like Comma give my truck a new lease on life.

jblaze121
Did a 400 mile drive to Mammoth and back and it did everything I had hoped Rivian was going to enable years ago.

FL530
It is very much the thing I hoped gen 1 ADAS would be. This put me over the edge, keeping my gen 1 now

Thinktactical
I’m cross countrying from Colorado to Miami using the comma right now.. it’s so much better than driver+ it’s crazy

ScottyG (scottyg0924)
Anyone with a Gen 1 Rivian should strongly consider getting Open Pilot. I've used it on long interstate trips and short in-town trips and there's so much potential that it unlocks. Potential that we all thought was coming from Rivian but didn't get for the Gen 1. The Comma 3X solves this. If you enjoy your Rivian, you'll enjoy it more with Open Pilot.

rgb70
I did do a pretty long trip from Las Vegas to San Jose (and back) over Memorial Day weekend and the Comma 3X seriously made a HUGE difference over Driver+. I’d estimate it was also about 98% hands free and really allows you to enjoy the drive in a way you just can’t with Driver+

Michael Stuart
Initial impression was very good, with just the standard Autopilot, but it was only two days before factory reset and installation of SunnyPilot with MADS and on-screen buttons for longitudinal control. Since then the experience is just about perfect!

@daadreeb6582
Fantastic product. Just returned from 1,500 mile road trip. Worked very well on just about every type of road imaginable. Cooperative steering is a superior approach and much better than Driver+.

CobraJerky
I’ve logged over 3,000 miles with my comma and it’s great. It’s what I hoped the driver assistance would be when I purchased the vehicle

mygrain
I installed a Comma 3X in my '23 R1S quad 6 weeks ago and have logged about 2000 miles with Comma. Driver+ is available on 0% of the roads I regularly drive. Comma 3X works on 100% of the roads I regularly drive.

mountainman
Just drove 1200 miles with Sunnypilot and default Tomb Raider. [It was a] pretty fantastic hands free experience.

Rfan
The Comma 3X does what the Rivian software should have evolved to be for my Gen 1 truck. Hands down the best Rivian accessory/upgrade I have done.

MrMusAddict
Let me be clear; the $1100 and frustrating installation is 100% worth it. No issues whatsoever over my 1726 miles driven this past week, and the entire drive was elevated because of the Comma 3X.

ScottyG (scottyg0924)
It’s been the best upgrade for my R1S. It’s so fun to drive now and the community is so supportive. If you have a Gen 1, I would 100% recommend it to anyone.

LL75
When I first put this on my wife's car, I thought she would be reluctant to use it. But after a few tries, she told me she used it almost everytime going to work. She loved it because it is always centered lane and not drifting.

josh0
I’m now about 350 miles into an ~2000 mile road trip. So far I have not been on a single road where Highway Assist would have been an option. [Openpilot] has been absolutely excellent, so far. This is a game changer, I love it.

SwampNut
It's still ridiculous that I can buy a $1,000 little tiny box and stick it on the glass and beat the systems from most car makers. All open source and started by one nerd who didn't understand that this "can't" be done.

Gigabit

CDC_73
This is a game changer with MADS mode. I could not recommend this enough for a Gen1.

This thread is meant to connect current Rivian owners with a Comma AI installed that are willing to give demo rides/drives to other Rivian owners looking to possibly purchase. With the advancement of the Gen 2 Universal Hands Free, more and more Gen 1 owners are feeling left out or like they are missing out and are now looking into the Comma AI option. Just like vehicle sales, getting people in Comma equipped vehicles will make up their mind rather quickly.

SO, if you are a current Comma user and are willing to give another from your area a ride, or even possible let them drive, in your vehicle demonstrating the Comma in action - reply here and I will try to keep this initial post updated with your City/State, Vehicle type (R1T or R1S) and Username so that others can DM you here to connect. If you don't want to list your info here, you can also DM me and I'll keep a private list as well. That way if someone from your area is interested, I can give YOU their Rivian Forums contact and you can choose whether to DM them or not.

If you are a Rivian owner that is interested in seeing the Comma in action and do not see someone listed below in your area to contact, please reply to the thread with your location and if someone sees it and are willing, they can contact you. Also, you probably could come back now and then as this list gets populated to see if there is coverage in your area. Also, remember that these people are taking time to help you. Be courteous and understanding throughout the process.

Things to note here - If someone contacts you and it seems shady or they are asking for money to pay for their time or ??? PLEASE contact me right away. As with anything, be safe about meetups- never meet at your house, make it a public place, yada yada. Rivian Forums nor myself are responsible for anything that happens in a meetup that you schedule. Be safe and have fun !!!

I'm a Comma 3X owner for about 2 months, and although it's largely been pretty good, there are two things that really frustrate me that I just can't figure out:

1) My Comma 3X's lane centering really biases towards the right side of the lane, so much so that in narrower roads, the right tires are running on the right road lines/border. I can't figure out any option to adjust lane centering bias.

2) I also have the longitudinal upgrade. When following the vehicle in front of me, it leaves way too long a gap, even in "Aggressive" mode. Rivian's stock ACC closes the gap much more tightly.

The build I've been using is sunnypilot staging with default settings. The Comma 3X is mounted immediately beneath the rear view mirror, centered with the rear view mirror.

Anyone have similar issues or suggestions?

Forgot to mention, I have a R1T if anyone in the ATL area has questions/wants to see it.

What driving model are you using? Have you tried others to see if they have better lane bias? Lane centering seems to be a strange beast - some people have lane bias (right or left) but others have none and it can be on the same driving model.

The gap is larger than stock ACC, but still within acceptable range to me. It typically stops with 9-10m between me and the car in front, and I think anything between 8-10m is ok, so it's definitely on the far end of that range but not bad. What's yours stopping at? You can bring up the developer stats on the screen to see what the numbers are.
