I wouldn't hold your breath on this though. The R1 was praised early on for its on-center steering feel. Over the years this has been tweaked because owners didn't like it and it's not as good as it used to be. The average consumer doesn't want their daily driver to feel like a sports car, they want a GT cruiser. The best thing I've read about the R2:
"Taking the freeway out of Irvine, heading for the hills, the R2 breezes the cruise; quiet, quick when you need it to be and utterly composed. The steering’s already standout, with more weight and feel than is typical for a car of this type. Accurate and intuitive, too, such that you feel confident right away. Not for nothing do videos exist of Koff holding filthily long off-road drifts in an R2, and Scaringe has long talked of its infectious chuckability versus the bigger R1.

Through a couple of early slip roads you sense this, the overtly rear-drive feel giving a real sense of balance and easy agility. Nominal torque split is 40:60 front-to-rear, and where the R1 shuts off its rear motor on a cruise, the R2 shuts off the front unit. "

I thought the same thing. I get the real world drop depending on your tires and how fast you drive. I put 65,000 miles on my first gen 1 quad T and never had the software say less than 311 miles even though I drive in Illinois winters. I would check my battery capacity. Drive it to near zero and then level 2 charge to 100 and see how many electrons went in.Really??? I feel like I get close to stated range except for certain circumstances…and my range still shows the exact same as when new after 2 years. Yours only shows 284 when charged to 100%?
The more I think about it, the more I think 400V was the right choice for this vehicle. As you note, the largest network in the US still doesn't support 800V natively. So if you want to use it with an 800V car, you have to include some type of conversion hardware/capability. That adds cost and complexity to every unit they sell, and price will be so critical for this car. It has to be reachable for the masses.10-80% is supposed to be under 30 minutes. 800V probably would only be a few percentage faster with their cooling setup.
If you charge at Tesla stations, this is probably the best situation for you, since Tesla is STILL dragging their asses on upgrading their network. I avoid them with my GMC, which is a 400V system when it wants to be, because it's incredibly slow compared even to RAN stations.
It would be unusual for them to allow cheaper car to outshine a more expensive model line. So most likely software limited.I'm a little surprised that this much lighter vehicle has nearly the same hp as the dual motor performance R1S, but slightly worse 0-60 time. I'm wondering if Rivian is still sandbaggging that number until actual release, or if they're just trying to leave extra room to push people for the tri-motor.
Understand what you are seeing: Pre-production. And the SW-insipired droid theme is a wrap like any other pre-pro camo... and meant to be more fun & inviting than conventional camo. And "fun" and "inviting" are what? Rivian's brand pillars. Actual colors yet to be announced on 3/12.Soooo, not bad overall?
They could have picked better colors for the "press cars", just my $0.02
same. I have an R1T and we are looking to replace my wife’s model 3 for the R2hmmm...the reviews seem promising and I can't wait to see the pricing.
I have an R1S and a 2022 Model Y and I could totally see replacing the Model Y with the R2.
I'm not really seeing a charging availablity problem....3 years into ownership on R1 and at full capacity when new the 314 range was real world 250 miles, I’m now down to 284
Max range which is more like 220 real world or less, they really need an option over 400 miles which should be 325-350 real world miles of range, not every model just as an option for those that need/ want it. I can barely make my drive from DFW to Bentonville Arkansas and have been almost stranded due to the range limits and severely limited charging options on that route. Since this doesn’t apply to everyone that’s why I’m saying hopefully a 400+ range option will exist
I haven't read much about it either, did catch something that there are no front lower door speakers to make room for more storage/reduce rattling and they put them in the center counsel but not sure if that's true or not.I haven't watched all of the reviews yet but so far no mention of the audio system. Did any of the reviewers listen to any music? Curious to know how the "new firewall-mounted vibration-canceling dual subwoofer" sounds. Motor Trend says it "Sounds good". That's not much help.
I think you're confusing your terminology a bit. An NMC battery IS lithium ion. "Lithium Ion" is an umbrella term that covers many different battery chemistries, of which NMC is one. Perhaps you are thinking of LFP, which is the other chemistry that Rivian uses.Pretty sure the battery pack is an Oil cooled NMC battery pack and not lithium-ion for the large Pack that is in these recent/ launch models.
