August '23 R1S here and they had mobile service proactively replace our 12V in January '25 and then they replaced it again in January of this year. I'm hoping, with all the data they collect from us, that their analytics system is getting better at spotting issues before they occur.

This is SO much better than the emails and phone calls I used to get from our ICE dealers informing me that it was time for an oil change even though the car had barely been driven since the last one.

Hah, I mean the free tier of Rivian Roamer is free without ads or tracking. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Costs money to store historical data.

I’ve had my 12V replaced when the red battery warning showed up. I wish Rivian would replace my 12V again before something like that happens.

I am guessing one of the big indicators may be DC to DC inverter time spent. Which, now make s me curious if I could even detect this via number of minutes vehicle is awake when it should be sleeping.
The settle voltage is a pretty big indicator of future failure as well. Rivian does have an advantage in that they have a field of over 100,000 vehicles they can take data points from, and they probably have logs from all the vehicles that have had failures. And they have been leaning pretty heavily on AI learning in other spaces, so I imaging they would be here too.

There's really quite a few other indicators, like voltage drop when the HV contactor is flipped over before activating the DC-DC. As long as it wasn't an internal short in the 12V battery, which is probably too rapid for early detection in a lot of cases.

I check the 12v voltage in the ride menu every couple of weeks as a precaution. It is my original from 11/23, now at 18 k miles. It is always above 14V. Is that a reasonable metric to consider?

I just got the red triangle. They proactively replaced mine Jan of 2025 and now that replaced one has failed. Rivian says system is normal. I will have had 3 batteries in my R1 in less than 3 years, seems like a design or function problem. BTW apparently the proactive replacement does not get the same new 3 or 36k warranty. Rivian has stated I would have to pay for this replacement.

Not really. At that point, the 12v system is being fed by the HV system and will likely always show ~14v.

Warranty replacements don't extend the initial warranty period, but it doesn't clear it either. If you are in the initial 3yr. 36k then the warranty is still in play. Once you buy the battery, there is a 2 year warranty on it.

I use Home Assistant as well. The normal battery operation indicator must not mean much since mine showed normal when I receive my email from Rivian about the proactive replacement. Mine was replaced via a mobile visit about three weeks ago.

Took delivery January 22. Got the red triangle last week. Mobile service due here tomorrow to replace battery.

I took delivery of my R1T in June of 2024 with the understanding that the PTC it was ordered with would be installed in the future. About five months later, Rivian notified me that the parts for the PTC were available, and I scheduled an appointment for the install. When I went to pick up the truck a few days later (early Dec 2024), the SC told me that they replaced the 12v battery. When I asked why, the tech told me that it was simply a proactive measure.

There have been no battery problems in the intervening 15 months and 11,000 miles, but if the red triangle is in my future, I hope it shows up before June 2027.

Went in for the cold-weather induced Degas hose and bottle replacement on my 25 R1t.
On a lark, asked them to check the battery. The found it defective and replaced it.
Phew!
It’s the only time I miss the old days when the lights dimmed or the starter clicked…and you could just swap in a new one in minutes.
