Came across this video today. The mathematics is beyond my understanding but I found it quite interesting. I plan on getting some 18 inch forged wheels for the R2 if they fit. I bet the lower rolling resitance and lighter wheel will give me 10% more range hopefully.

Thank you for updating the Rivian Tire Guide to include the R2 options, as best as they are known. My main consideration for tires is for ski trips each winter, and so I tend to prefer 3PMS rated tires (favorites are Michelin Crossclimate 2). Am I correct in seeing that 20" wheels would give me more options? It looks like there would be a hit in range over the 21" wheels, and as an option I assume there will be an up-charge. Beyond aesthetics, any other considerations I should be thinking about when deciding wheel size?

Digging in the 20" setup, just for a little more sidewall. I'd love to get a beefier setup (mileage be damned :D ), granted, it's not going to be something like our Wrangler (285/70-17), but maybe in the 265-275 range with the appropriate aspect ratio/wheel sizing (i.e., proper backspace/offset).

I trust in our forum wheel vendors to solve this in the aftermarket :)

I most certainly will never buy a 21” wheel/tire option on a vehicle again. From early delivery of our truck there were no options available! Yes, now there are a handful but they are still significantly higher priced than the 20” comparable. I found a set of 20’s for sale from another local owner and now the 21’s just take up space in my garage because they are near worthless. Even the secondary market for them is a joke with several posts in my region of people marking them for free pickup or sub $500/set…

That being said I had no performance issues from the tire and got almost 47k out of them. But the Michelin Defender is a significant improvement all the way around! I’ll spec either the 20 or the cheapest upon and see if the aftermarket area comes in strong!

Thank you - that helps with my question.

Isn't this due to 21" being an orphaned wheel size for R1 Gen 1? Wonder if availability is as bad on 22" even though it's a bigger size since it's still available for gen 2?

The 21" wheels for R2 should be available on a far bigger vehicle fleet over time. Just from a tire option perspective and resale value.

Most manufacturers have gone away from this tire size due to cost and option availability. So the market for a 21” tire that can safely support a vehicle of this weight was non existent initially… now there are about 4 options for AS and 1-2 AT and again all higher in price due to lower manufacturer volume in this size… I’ve already recouped the cost of the second set of rims in just the difference of the price in tires for the 20’s… But I also bought a fifth wheel/tire for a matching spare…

How are you gonna match with the other set?
I bought a fifth matching 20” rim and had them put the same exact Michelin on it at the tire shop… I’ve been doing 5 tire rotations for even tread wear and longer interval between changes…

I was thinking about the 21" if you're ever gonna use those...

Yea I still have a full set of 4 of those; parted with one as another owner wanted a spare. I’ll probably sell them individually since as a set they just don’t bring anything!

I really don't understand rivian logic for 21" on the r2 with one tire option and with the shitty pirelli nevertheless. They are repeating the same mistake as the r1. It is so bad that they don't even included the 21" option for r1 gen 2.

There are a couple of AT options for the 21’s now? I’ve been waiting but stopped looking months ago. Do you have manufacturer/models?
I was going to do the same as you and buy 20’s then garage the 21’s but I’m leasing with only a little over a year left so that’s not the best financial option right now.

QUESTION: Is it true that I would get more Range with 20inch vs 21inch Tires? Plus is cheaper to get 20inch tires
