I was in touch with my SC regarding another issue and happened to inquire about the 12v battery in my 2023 R!T, VIN 26XXX. I have had no issues with it, but just thought I would inquire about it. He checked and determined that I was eligible for a new battery. So, I will be having it replaced in short order. Mobile service will take care of it.

Rivian called me yesterday, Saturday December 21st, out of the blue to proactively schedule the replacement of my 12v battery. They said it was fine to continue operating as normal until mobile service can get to me, which they were actually unable to schedule for some reason, and said the local SC would contact me on Monday. I am impressed that they proactively contacted me for the replacement, but at the same time, I just waiting for the other shoe to drop now and nervous about an imminent failure. What I find strange is that I just had the vehicle in at the service center a little over a week ago to repair the fixed panel, front triangle windows and adjust trim for excessive wind noise, yet they didn't mention anything at that point in time. In my experience, the local SC can usually get you in much sooner than mobile service, so I plan to go that route when they reach back out to me.

August 2023 delivery. Currently 3,400 miles

My T is having the battery and hub-knuckle fasteners work done, under warranty. I went in for other service.

Rivian's proactive campaign service called me and I made a mobile appointment for the battery replacement. They also included the hub torque check and portable charger seal. Call time to the mobile appointment date was 10 days (called on Wednesday or Thursday and the appointment was on a Monday week after).

It was completed this past Monday at my home, except for the hub torque check. They said it all looked and felt fine but I was concerned, I should call and schedule a service center appointment for that. I have not thus far.

The portable charger seal goes in between the 120V/240V pigtail and the portable charger main unit. Looks like a silicone gaskets for each of the prongs.

The 12V battery was changed and They also checked the cabin filter condition (which was fine @ 20K miles).

The whole thing took about 30 minutes to complete.

Just got the proactive 12v call as well and scheduled mobile service for early January. Does the replacement help mitigate any future 12v issues that have been so prominent, or does this just kick the issue down the curb a little further?

Edit: note I have had the R1S for 18 months without any 12v issues to-date.

I am having my battery changed out this next week - mobile service. They are also throwing in the hub/knuckle check, although I hadn’t initially requested that. Has anybody received a definitive explanation for the battery issue?

No phone calls here, but I do have a ticket in for a front parking sensor that is "falling into the bumper." I reported it in Sept, they rescheduled me for December 17. The date approached and they set me up with an enterprise rental instead of a loaner as requested and I heard of the 3 week SC waits so I told them to keep the ticket open but cancel the appointment.and I would get it fixed in the spring when a new service center is scheduled to open closer to my home and hopefully not be as busy.

Based on the chatter here, I looked at my tickets and see they added a "replace 12v battery" ticket to them.

March 2023 build here.

I was told by the SC that battery issues were mostly confined to a date range that you and I are both in.

All vehicles (ICE or EV) have some 12v battery issues. I had to replace the battery on my last ICE vehicle 6 months in.

Had the 12v battery replaced, today. In 15,000 miles, I had no issues with the original. The replacement battery was identical to the original. It is an AGM deep cycle battery. I was told the issue was/is not with the batteries, but with the BMS (battery maintenance system). Apparently, the BMS was routinely allowing the 12V batteries to discharge too deeply, too often, leading to their early demise. I guess/hope they have now made the necessary adjustment to better maintain the battery. Like most things Rivian, it is an evolutionary process ?

If BMS is at fault, taken literally, this feels like they are just replacing damaged battery without addressing the faulty BMS itself? Unless they did that already, quietly, through one of the OTAs and are just replacing 12V that may have been compromised already.
