5 tire rotation experiences?

What are people's general thoughts on 5 tire rotations? Now that I have a full size spare I was thinking about doing my own rotations since you obviously only need one jack at a time with 5 tires. The mobile service guy that brought it out suggested against it since "you then have to buy 5 new tires someday". Well ya, but I won't need to do it as soon if I'm rotating 5. Anyway, what do some of you expert wheel/tire guys think?

I only rotate it out when I buy all new tires, and place the spare in service, and set aside a new tire for the spare. That makes sure my spare never rots.

My local service center said they can do the 5-tire rotation no problem but advised against introducing a new tire to the mix with other tires already having 6k more miles. With the alignment and steering wheel vibration already not so great they thought it could only make it worse.

I did the 5 tire rotation. Used only rivian tools that came with the truck. Took about 35-40 minutes. No issues encountered during the process. I do think I'll get an aftermarket puck (the included one is plastic and not sure about durability) and use a proper jack to make things faster.

Feel free to rotate in your 5th tire, that will give you more total mileage on that 'set' of tires before wearing out the tread. As for having to buy a 5th tire, that makes no sense. Total tread capacity would be 20% more with a 5th tire being in the set of tires being used. And when it's time for new tires, just don't replace the 5th one, leave it a used spare. Still a great tire for the rare scenario of having a flat.

If he does that, won't that change his rotation into a 4-tire version? I think he's hoping to maintain the 5-tire pattern through new sets.

I agree with @Joe Hoffman as that's my exact plan. For the first set of tires. The minimal wear of the original spare will be a couple 100th of an inch compared to the original four tires. This will undoubtedly give you more miles out of the original set before having to purchase new tires.

Once the original set wears out, then you only need to buy 4 new tires. You should however, buy 5 new tires if you change the overall diameter of your tires when going to a new set. For example a lot of people with 20" OEM tires will go from a 65 to a 60 series which is about 1" lower (and about equal to the 21" diameter). In that case, then you should definitely buy 5 tires.

Just got my full-size spare last week and am planning to do my own 5 tire rotations as well. How often are you all rotating? I'm no expert but seems like every 4k miles if you expect the tires to last 32k miles each (might be a stretch) or every 3k miles if you expect them to last 24k miles each, or somewhere in between.

Yeah, I did this once. Old guy, just not that much fun jacking up a 7000 lb truck with the jack in the wheelwell, which itself is kind of a puzzle to get unwrapped and wrapped back up correctly when you're done. Bought a (semi) real jack last time the 3 ton floor jacks were on sale at Harbor Freight, and a after market puck. The plastic puck is a bit disconcerting......

I had planned to do 5-tire rotations, but I'll probably have 11,000 miles on the first four, by the time RJ deigns to sell me the fifth one. I had wanted all five to wear out at the same time, and had planned to buy five new (a different brand) AT tires at that time. Another advantage to 5-tire rotation is that if a tire becomes destroyed, you've got another tire with similar wear, and then you can switch to a 4-tire rotation (and buy a new spare tire). Because the tires used on Rivians may not be as quickly available as those on many other cars, it is good to have a tire that will match the other three, if one becomes damaged.

live in Kauai. Minimal tire shops. Prior to shipping R1T to KauaiI purchased from Harbor Freight their Daytona 3 Ton super Duty floor jack and a set of Jack Pucks. I think floor Jack was around $269. Put Jack in gear tunnel for shipping. Jack Pucks in frunk. Prior to shipping removed 4 snow tires from truck and installed the 4qty. all-terrain mounted to the 20’s that came with truck. Easy Peary with floor Jack- not so using Rivian supplied scissor Jack and the plastic extender and pla Jack puck.
Regarding 5 tire rotation- I am going to do that when I hit 5,000 miles. Comments regarding rotating a new tire to existing group could cause steering and vibration never entered my mind but has so now. I do agree one should keep spare fresh.

Just got my full-size spare last week and am planning to do my own 5 tire rotations as well. How often are you all rotating? I'm no expert but seems like every 4k miles if you expect the tires to last 32k miles each (might be a stretch) or every 3k miles if you expect them to last 24k miles each, or somewhere in between.

I've been doing 5 tire rotations at 8,000 miles (20" AT) and am on track to last to at least 40,000 miles (currently around 30,000). That is with "spirited" and off road driving.

I went to local tire shop & had tires rotated & balanced. Using my brightly polished pucks, they tried to lift it on a 4 point lift. Using their rubber padded round lift points, they wanted to slide off the lift. They switched to a rectangular lift point, metal contact point, but with 2 edges turned up. this helped, as the truth wanted to slide forward. They finally used the rectangular pads, and added a 1" rubber block between the rectangular point and the puck. I had much the same issue using the provided scissors jack and puck, along with tire chocks. The truck tended to move backwards as much as 2.5 inches, before I gave up. Is this something to do with the suspension???

I did a 5 tire rotation myself at 7k miles, using the jack kit with the truck. I am about to do a second one before a trip, but now have a puck and will either use a floor jack or a bottle jack that I have.

The scissor jack that came with the truck seems marginal at best, so I was placing a jack stand under the control arms, just in case.

I did a 5-tire rotation with a floor jack and jack puck. No issue with performing the rotation except now my TPMS wont re-register and I have to wait 2 months for a service appointment.
