I am about to order the Chevy Silverado RST and they are offering a free charger that is capable of 19.2kW output. Obviously I need to have it wired to a very large breaker for this to be possible, but I was curious if the Rivian could also charge at this rate?

Nope, still limited to 48A. That's 80A.

Might be possible if Rivian implemented dual onboard chargers. Tesla did this years ago. It really only makes sense though with really large batteries. Even with the Rivian R1 large battery having 131 kwh usable your still able to charge up mostly overnight. You would be able to do a 20% to 80% charge in 7 and a half hours. The Silverado though has a significantly larger battery.

The 19.2 kw charging drops this to about 7 hours so you can see the benefit there especially if your in a area with TOU rates. The 19.2 kw charging on the Silverado RST would be well worth it.

No. The single on-board charger in the Rivian is only capable of 11.5kW.

Thanks for the replies. That is what I thought. It would be nice to charge Rivain at the full 80A

I assume that I can still use the charger, but the Rivian just limits the charge.

For about a year, the first releases of the Model X had a single on-board charger that could do 72A. For home use, I think the R1's current (pun intended) charger is fine.

In summer heat, Rivian hasn't even been charging at the full 11.5 kW. Many of us have experienced the charge rate being throttled at ambient temps around (or perhaps a little under) 90F.

Makes one wonder if they can "fix" this issue with the current hardware? Obviously the battery can charge at much higher rates.. look at the DCFC rates. It's something in the L2 AC charging system that's the problem, not the battery itself. Wasn't it identified as the actual L2 charge port getting too hot?

yeah I seem to remember the actual J1772 connector getting hot in the sun. Maybe they should have made the cord and connector white.

And a 19.2 kw charge rate at 240 volts requires a 100 amp breaker when you allow for the additional 20% heating factor. That’s a pretty substantial load and would tax many older power panels

I only charge at 32amps due to the fact that I set up my L2 circuit back in the day for my 2012 Plug In Prius.. But even at that reduced charge current I experienced the port overheating issue one time last summer when charging where the sun was hitting the vehicle charge port.

It's not just in the sun. My charging gets throttled at night in my garage where temps are commonly over 90F much of the night during the summer.

Yeah, DC vs AC charging have different thermal characteristics and limitations. Perhaps they were being overly conservative with the L2 throttling. If not, probably not much that can be done without a hardware change. If not resolved in current hardware, perhaps they will fix with eventual move to NACS port.

Interesting. I’ve never had mine throttled in 90-100F temps. Only if the connector is in the sun
