Closing charge port door is a pain -- Am I missing something?

They changed the way the port closes a couple of updates ago. I used to be able to go out in the morning and remove the cable. It would immediately close. Some people complained it was to fast and it cut their hand. Some also had the outside panel come off because it closed too soon and they caught it on the charger.

Since the update I have to close the port by hitting sensor. It only works if the car is awake because I have my phone or fob on me. If I don't have the fob or phone I go back into the house to get it then close it. I can leave it open but it might take hours for it to close. I learned the hard way when I had to clean wet grass from the gardener's weedwhacker out of the port. I definitely preferred the way it worked before.

Regardless of charge port door, I would talk to the gardener about the direction of their discharge. Not acceptable to be hitting the vehicles when mowing or blowing debris.

On thing I have found is just pressing the frunk button once and waiting about 10s wakes the vehicle but does not open the frunk. That way I can then open or close the charge port without going back inside the house or into the vehicle.

I'm having the same issue. Let me start at the beginning. I have the R1S set not to lock at home. There are times when I lock it in the garage because the space between it and my Tesla X is pretty narrow. The Rivian door handles sticking out can be hazardous, especially when they catch on a piece of clothing or the crook of your elbow. So I lock it sometimes.

As standard practice, I leave the car plugged in to the charger until I'm ready to go. When I do lock it, even with my phone in hand and setup to unlock by proximity, I can't close the charge port door. I know the car has to be unlocked and awake, but my phone only unlocks the vehicle only when I'm at the driver's side door. It's not unlocking the same way the key fob unlocks it.

When I leave it unlocked and on the charger, the exact same thing happens.

Any suggestions other than carrying the fob around?

Thanks! I knew there was some kind of simple solution to this problem that I was missing. I'll check out the under-door cord protectors.

On rare occasions I use an old cutting board that happened to be the right thickness.

The under the door cord things help but they arent going to stop some neighborhood dickhead messing with his charger. Maybe that's what he's worried about.

Right up until you, or someone else runs into the door, snags something on it, or you could use the space to squeeze by the vehicle.

I'm one of those people who like to charge (almost) daily to 70%. Every evening, I go out to unplug my car and it bugs me that I have to unlock it, close the charge port door, and re-lock it each night. Am I missing something? Is there some way to close the charge port door while the truck is locked? I can open everything EXCEPT the charge port via the app.

First, there is no reason to unplug it before you are ready to go somewhere. If the truck is secure at home (ie in a garage, then you have the option to leave it unlocked.
Finally, you have to unlock to unplug anyway (security feature). The charge port cover can be closed via the sensor on the wheel cover right next to the charge port….how is that too much trouble for you since you unlocked the vehicle to unplug it and the sensor is literally about 6” from the port cover?!

I open either the driver or front passenger door, pause to let the screens come to life, then tell Alexa to close the charge port door. She's always happy to comply immediately.

No need to carry your phone, card, or fob.

Having a nice sized garage is a plus.

I wish you could open/close the charg port door from the app. I have pulled into the garage got the charger and then had to climb back in the car, get to the correct screen, open the charge port and then plug in multiple times. A real first world problem.

Come on! Familiarize yourself with your expensive new EV. Maybe try the owners manual. There is a touch sensor to open and close the charging port cover literally inches from the cover along the wheel well!

I get a reminder from my ChargePoint to plug and then I leave it overnight but I don't lock it at home in the garage. Or open the port from the inside when I park and plug n play overnight. Then unplug when I leave next day and the doors auto shuts when you put in gear.

My truck seems extra sleepy as of late. I cannot get the charge port door to open and have to open a door of the truck first and then it even takes the screens a bit to wake up to come to life. Anyone else? is this the beginning of a 12v issue?

I don’t know if someone answered this but if you plug in again then unplug the charging hatch closes.
