What does this additional dongle do exactly? I saw it is an extra $400 and needs extra cable to Comma. From description it sounds like it is only for changing speed via steering wheel, did I get it right?
Thanks, I’m just trying to understand all the options.
No problem. The additional dongle, also known as the longitudinal upgrade, allows the Comma device to control speed and braking as well as steering.

Without the upgrade and with the base harness, the Comma will only control steering. The Rivian will control speed and braking with its own built-in cruise control system.

Allowing the comma to control the speed is just one thing. The longitudinal adapter also gives comma the ability to use the blind spot sensors, which allows for automatic lane changes by just signaling without worry of something in your blindspots. It will not move if the sensors see something there.

Allowing comma to control the speed also gives the ability for the comma to slow the vehicle for turns via smart cruise control either by map contours or by vision.

There is also experimental mode which stops for stop signs and lights- sometimes. It's not ready for daily use yet as it will sometimes slow but not actually stop or not even slow at all. Fun to play with but need to be watchful and ready to take over.

I would be happy to do demo drives. I live in Bloomington, IL (across town from the Rivian factory). I have a Comma 3X in my '23 Gen1 R1S quad. @Mygrain

Openpilot is great if you are happy with only using it on the highway since Rivians ACC will only dial down to 20mph.
I think this deserves clarification, because I spent a lot of time using it in the city with the built in ACC. It works fine, maybe better, since right now the speed control has that severe stopping distance/rate problem. I am actually considering deactivating the longitudinal control and compare it again. And I really HATE the slowing for curves, but the Rivian does it too.

There are limitations, and although you can't SET the speed to run below 20, why would you? You can set it for 100 in traffic and it's just going to follow.

The thing is, with Sunnypilot mads mode you don't need cruise at all, so you are not limited to having to be going at least 20mph everywhere. That doesn't work well for stop signs/lights. You control the speed all the way down to zero/hold .
With Openpilot you HAVE to have cruise engages for lateral control.

Thanks for clarification, that’s good to know.
I probably would get just the Comma, at least for now.
The MADS sounds like a good feature. And I’ll use my eyes for lane change ;)

How does Lukas upgrade work with Comma 4, doesn't it need 2 ports on the Comma?

Gah, clean that up!

I'm gonna clean it up a bit (and mount it a bit higher), just waiting for my Janka mount to arrive. Is that a magnetic adapter on the secondary cable?

Is there an update on AXM power issue?
Would I need to pull pins from connector and hotwire it to the fuse box/OBD port?

That's what we recommend if you purchase the wiring harness from Comma. Lukas' harness already has the AXM power connection removed.

I see, is there a diagram for re-wiring the connector I can reference?
Also, can I wire it to “ignition” source? Would powering it off be ok? I understand official obd connection is always on.
