This likely has been answered but I was hoping someone could explain why my motor temps get so hot when dc fast charging.

I usually charge at home but yesterday I drove from Chicago to Milwaukee and the R1s suggested a quick 10-15 min charge on the way home. Temp outside was 10 degrees. I went to a 150kw electrify America charger and charged for 10 min. Motors got so hot so quickly. We are talking over 250 degrees f in 10 min.

Rivian copied Tesla's design where they use motor windings to help bring the battery up to charging temperature when needed. Unfortunately, on the first iteration this was done on a jacket cooled motor (the Bosch) where Tesla's design was built based on an oil bath motor. As a result, the Bosch motored Rivian has to really throw some temps into those motors to get any usable heat out of it. It is a relatively inefficient design.

Rivian corrected this on version 2 of their drivetrain (the Enduro), but for those running Bosch motors, high temps are the norm when trying to get some heat into the battery.

This has indeed been covered about 1000 times since the update showed us the temps. It is normal :)

One of my motors hit 290 degrees when I was charging last week while outside temp was -14. My only thought was how much I would love for some of that heat to reach my frozen feet.

Rivian really needs to update the software to show when it's doing this.

For example, when your DC fast charging the battery temperature is not displayed, it's simply displays a lightning bolt. When the motors are generating waste heat to condition the battery, a similar icon should be displayed in place of the motor temperature gauges to prevent the driver from becoming alarmed.

Ugg. You are really suggesting we want data hidden from us? It is annoying enough that they don't want me to see the battery temperatures, don't hide more data from me!

I want inverter temperatures. I want the deep dive screens Tesla provides for energy usage. More information is good, more information helps people make better plans and decisions. Every time someone suggests information should be taken away from us " dumb drivers" It makes my teeth hurt.

Does the rivian even have vents at the foot level? I too think my feet are always cold in that car.

I can confirm there are vents under there :giggle: , but they don’t really seem to push much air regardless of how high the fan is turned up. Others have suggested the floor vents work better if you always leave the rear vents on or you only use the auto HVAC setting, so I am trying that now.

Luckily we don’t get many days in CO that cold…

both of these things can be accomplished at the same time -- something like putting a different background tint color behind the temperature values, or adding a symbol denoting the system is preconditioning/heating for efficiency.

I've seen the motors do this for level 2 (6kw) charging also, not just DCFC.

How was that company able to get such accurate models of my actual feet?

Did your truck ship with the driver monitoring camera? If not, I'd surmise they may have just repositioned it instead of removed...

no WONDER they moved the horns from driver side to passenger side... now we know what took that footwell/wheel liner prime real estate over there.
