Has anyone done cold weather testing on the new Gen 2 cars? Today I am letting my 2025 Gen 2 R1S Perf Max cold soak outside in -5 to 5 F weather today (normally my car sits in a heated garage). So far the car has been sitting outside for about 4 hours in this weather. I want to stress test the heat pump because its new and I don't have a ton of confidence that it will function on a road trip in very cold temps.

I am going to let it sit for about 7 hours. Then jump in (without preconditioning) to see how the heat pump functions and if there are other impacts.

I do my best to avoid temperatures like that.

I haven't had mine in anything below 25 degrees thus far. Aside from being kinda rumbly I've been happy with its performance! Efficiency isn't bad either!

I will time how long it takes to get warm. I didn't put a thermometer in the car, so will have to use the in-app reading.

Cool

Heat pump heated faster than PTC overall. For the heat pump - looks like it took about 7 minutes to get some slight warm air to come out of the vents. About 18 minutes till it starts to crank out heat. I will report back on how mine does.

I've noticed that when climate is running, my app consistently reads around 5 degrees lower than the set temp. Never seems to quite get to all the way there. Seems to be by design

I just picked up my Gen 2 two days ago after running my Gen 1 for two and a half years without a garage in NY’s Catskill mountains. It was 24 when I pre-heated last evening and I was surprised at how quickly the temp came up to 66. It then slowed markedly and I did not wait for it to reach the 72 degree target temp.

I've had my Gen 2 R1S for two weeks now and I have to say i'm impressed (it's been -15c the last two days). It heats up just as fast as my Model Y albeit the R1S is MUCH louder lol. The range hit though in the cold (although anecdotal) is much worse. Granted the R1S is less efficient than the MY regardless of weather, in the cold I do feel it's exponentially worse.

Agreed, it is LOUD! It seems Rivian could have done better. I have not driven my new Gen2 much yet, but the estimated range hit when charging is much larger than my Gen1 was.

Here are my results and some notes. Overall I am very happy with the performance of the heat pump after cold soaking in ~0° F temps for 7 hours.

Rivian R1T R1S Gen 2 Cold Weather Testing anyone? Screenshot 2024-12-13 at 1.40.23 PM

  • Recap
    • Vehicle = Gen 2 2025 R1S Performance Dual Max, 1100 miles
    • Time + Outdoor Temperature = 7 hours @ -4° to 4° F
    • Starting SOC = 60%
    • Ending SOC (heating to 70° F) = 58%
  • Results
    • I tracked the interior temp using the temperature reading in the app.
    • The system started pumping out heat in less than a minute which was surprising. It was comfortable within 5 minutes with a coat on.
    • The heated seats and steering started warming in less than a minute as well.
  • Observations
    • After sitting in around 0° F weather, everything worked and nothing broke.
    • The app will read the interior temperature when car is awake, but when it sleeps it defaulted to the last driving temp. This seems par for Gen 2s which are buggy in general.
    • The air suspension was noticeably impacted in this weather. While it functioned, it was much slower to respond than when in warmer weather.
    • The heat pump is loud when it is running at full rate.

Thanks for doing that test! glad to know it performed as well as it did!

Interesting note on this. That is not how mine behaves at all. Mine won't default to the last driving temp. In the morning's I'll regularly see the app reporting that it's mid 40s -50s in the cabin... about the ambient temp in my garage). That being said, I have noticed that when I wake it up to start climate, the reading will change by a few degrees. I'm guessing that it updates much less frequently when asleep.

Meanwhile I'm experiencing bugs on everything from audio channels going missing, to radars going offline, to suspension errors. ?

This is great. I guess this will interact with battery temperature in a somewhat complicated way. The vehicle needs to warm up the battery at the same time. It probably takes a lot longer for the battery to hit its ideal temp. And if you're just taking a short trip, that energy is probably mostly wasted.
