When I first got my R1T, I combined it with my home through Rivian/Nationwide on a new policy. The home insurance is a little more expensive but I figured if I had an insurance claim on the truck it may be less of a hassle since Nationwide partnered with Rivian.
But this Feb (one year of having the truck) Nationwide more than doubled my home insurance despite not having any claims (in >30years of owning a home, I have never made a home claim). I called twice and neither time got an adequate explanation. I live in the mountains above Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula and the risk of any natural disaster is minimal. I haven't got around to filing a complaint with the state insurance commission yet but it seemed like a bait and switch trying to take advantage of the Rivian loyalty.

Over on other social media the trolls like to say "Insurance on a Rivian is 100x that of a normal vehicle!" and other such nonsense. I waste entirely too much time arguing, to no avail.
I'm constantly being told this, and when I post my actual rates, people have said I'm lying. Progressive is $572 for BOTH of our cars cars, for six months. That's with 100/300 liability and uninsured, $1k deductible, no glass. The glass coverage is a killer on this car, every company nearly doubled the rate. So I put protection film on the windshield and I'll run the risk myself. The highest driver for higher rates right now is theft, and the Rivian is pretty well not stealable plus its not desirable for theft anyway.

But this Feb (one year of having the truck) Nationwide more than doubled my home insurance despite not having any claims (in >30years of owning a home, I have never made a home claim).
Today I'm switching the house from American Family to Progressive. I didn't notice, but in two years they took us from $1600/year to $2500. Yesterday they sent a notice of reduced coverage for the roof. Progressive is at $1450 with higher limits.

I live in Oregon and I'm through progressive and mine is pretty reasonable.
What are you guys using as an expense for expensiveness.?

What is your guys's monthly rate?
Monthly rate was $260. Nationwide just increased it to $400 in February. I hadn’t noticed cancelling asap and witching to Geico which is quoting me $220.

California; no accident history; no ticket hx.

I saw a news item, recently, where GM had been feeding data on their drivers to insurance companies (surreptitiously, or mistakenly, selected opt in for giving the data). Does anyone know Rivian's policy on customer data? Can we be sure that they do/will not sell/provide this information to insurance companies (and other buyers)? Information about how fast we drive or accelerate, how many panic stops, and where/when we drive?

But was surprised to see Nationwide actually sent me a refund on my insurance this morning. Guess they're not getting as many claims as they thought, or maybe my area has become safer (all the other Northern Virginia people will laugh at this). It's not much but hey, I'll take it!

No real reason for this post, Just sharing because it made my day. ?

Well, I got the other end of the stick - they up and cancelled me. Reason given was the windshield replacement claim. Talked with my Rivian agent and he said Nationwide is trying to shed the bulk of their auto policies and apparently the minor claim triggered if for me. He also said CinFin wasn't writing new policies in my area unless I bundled and I wasn't doing that. The next thing he told me was if I was ok with Progressive, to just go get a policy there because in the next couple months, Rivian is bringing Progressive on board and he would switch me back to a Rivian style policy once that was complete.

Similar to insight a Rivian agent gave me regarding the situation in CA. Apparently it's industrywide, all insurance companies are cutting back to limit their exposure. And Rivian is having a hard time finding an insurance partner.

Man, I hope they do. I don't want to subsidize idiots who drive like assholes. My Tesla insurance rewarded safe driving, as they should, with a lower rate.

Maybe your insurance company will cancel you because they see that you have driven on a road or in a part of town that they decide is too risky. Or maybe they'll cancel you or raise your rates because they decide you may have braked too hard (because some other fool made some dangerous lane change or pulled out in front of you). If insurance companies have access to such data, they will decide what and how it is interpreted. You could end up looking for a new insurance policy or paying much higher rates, even if you aren't one of the "idiots who drive like assholes."

As it should be. And then another, more rational company will get my business, and we all win.

I literally just got my quote for my new insurance. Been with State Farm for about 20 years--no particular loyalty, but no good reason to change.

"CURRENT PREMIUM $162.69 *
DIFFERENCE + $342.67 *
MONTHLY PREMIUM $84.23"

This is going from a 2003 Mazda B4000 (basically a Ford ranger) to an R1T. Yeah, it's more. But I added "collision" insurance on my new Rivian, which I dropped from the Mazda a long time ago!

I think I still deserve a bottle of Pappy van Winkle, but I'll settle for my go-to of Highland Park, 12, Laphroiag quarter cask, or Lagavulin, 16! ?

Your idea of "rational" may not coincide with that of insurance companies. But you do you.

I've had Nationwide since I was 16 and first got a license. I always had decent rates even in Southern California until I got my R1T. They have even increased the premium twice in 2 years. have to start shopping around, but the combination of this car and this location will realistically always be high.

I believe in free markets, see them operate, and know someone will fill a gap to take my money. No paranoia, and I welcome the ability to pay for what I use. I'd like mile based, and driving based insurance, please.

Thanks for the tip on the switch to Progressive. Helpful to know this is where they are rumored to be heading.

The biggest problem for me has been having a teenage driver on the same policy as the R1T. Geico automatically rates the highest risk driver on the highest risk vehicle and won't make adjustments even though the teenager is not allowed to drive the Rivian. I ended up moving the teenager and her car to Progressive and got Geico to agree to switch the teen to a guest driver status. Saved me about $2k per year.

I'm about to have to deal with this all over again with teenager #2 and am not looking forward to the shell game of shuffling drivers and cars around between insurers. Ugh... :headbang:
