Surprised no one has yet to post a story of completely running out of charge in the middle of nowhere.
Motor Trend did that ON PURPOSE. It ended badly for them.

I got down to 4 miles once. Sucked big time to recharge back to 100%. It took literally the entire day at an EA station that was being throttled due to high temperatures. Learned my lesson, and I’ll never do that again.

5 miles.
Driving cross country and was routed to a broken charger in Shawnee, OK. Struck out at a second station, EVgo at a closed dealership. Had just enough to backtrack to OKC Tesla supercharger on conserve mode at 55 mph with AC off. Good times!

On a road trip right now and I skipped 4 Tesla charging stations along the way to take advantage of the large battery / range. I charged to 96% at home and took it down to 17%.

I arrived at the station with 47 miles and had a warning saying low battery and charge soon.

That’s honestly the limit for me. Probably 40 miles buffer as long as I have the Tesla Supercharger adapter.

I got down to 1 mile left, as I was getting near the EA chargers at Walmart in Flagstaff. I had only owned my R1T for a few months, at that point, and it was my first trip up the hill (from Phoenix) to Flagstaff, so I had not realized how much additional energy it would take. Very scary.
I'll let it go below 10%, sometimes, rather than stop at a DCFC (if I'm on my way home). But I slow down and keep an eye on efficiency and range, and keep a back up plan.

Tesla says range reduction is adversely affected by using Level 3 charging, Charging to or near 100% and running the battery near to empty
There are numerous studies, at this point, that indicate there isn't much reason to fear battery degradation due to using DCFCs and charging to 100%. There are guys who have Teslas that they rented out that were charged everyday (multiple times) on DCFC (to 100%), and have gotten over 400,000 miles. You can see some of these accounts on YouTube.
Myself, on most days I charge to 80 or 85% using my level 2 charger, but if I'm going out of town, I'll charge to 100%, and use DCFC chargers as necessary.

A couple of weeks ago, was driving home from Michigan, we normally stop at RAN in Maumee, OH. We dropped off my sons car at Tesla supercharger in Findlay, OH on the way up. Decided to not stop twice, R1S said 11 miles left upon arrival. That lowered to 4 miles left at arrival and about 1 miles off the exit received a warning message that vehicle was reducing power to conserve range. Never saw that before, and we were already in Conserve mode.

Curious to how close others have come to “zero”.
I didn’t have a wall charger for the first week I had my R1T, and I wasn’t yet experienced in estimating the distances I travelled. I found myself under 10% with nothing but a Tesla charger near me.

I drive to the closest EVgo level 2 charger but hit 0% while still on the highway. The 0 turned red, and then I just had a red “!” On the screen. I went another 3 or 4 miles and made it to the charger.

Needless to say, it didn’t do much for my range anxiety…
