I wish Rivian would enable the tank turn!

Three years ago Rivian showcased the ability do a tank turn. I'd love them to enable that! Anyone else?

Nope! I like Rivian’s philosophy regarding the tank turn and why it has not been implemented. I can just imagine people out on the trails, and elsewhere, tearing shit up with tank turns. I think RJ decided that threat was not consistent with Rivian’s environmental responsibility concerns. Good on them!!!

I didn't realize that's why they got rid of it. I stand corrected.

Oh, please. Anyone that would intentionally damage the trails are simply going to floor it anyway whoever they're in the mood. A greatly reduced turning radius at the expense of tire slippage would be very handy in many spots, and their stated concerns about controlling the maneuvers would be well addressed by limiting how much that radius could be reduced.

I'm not buying it that it was for the 'preservation of the natural environment'. Like @thrill mentioned, anyone can still do damage easily with these trucks if they want to.

I think there were some serious reliability issues with this feature if not used properly (on correct loose ground surface) they didn't want to have to deal with any possibility of people ruining the trucks while attempting this on unsuitable surfaces.

I believe it was also putting very high loads back into the powertrain components unless you had a sufficiently low friction surface to attempt it on, as others have pointed out.

It's a cool marketing gimmick, though, like having bulletproof glass or the potential for the car to drive itself.

This. It's avoidance of warranty claims and reliability hit, not "the environment"

Yeah, I suspect that more than one Rivian employee crashed while testing this. And Rivian decided that if their employees can't use it safely, there's no chance that customers could.

You think that there are a lot of complaints about tires wearing out NOW? Just wait until you have tank turn.

People are talking about suing Rivian because they only got 7k or so out of their tires; blaming "conserve mode" and saying that if Rivian gives you conserve mode as an option then they they ought to expect you to use it and ought to guarantee 60k (or whatever) of tire wear.

I'll tell you, if you try to use tank turn on bare pavement just once, you're going to do more damage to your tires than 1000 miles of conserve mode.

Bottom line, tank turn was a concept car idea and demonstration - it was never part of the production specifications. And I don't think it will ever be made available, because even though it might be useful in certain circumstances the VAST majority of uses are just going to be good ole boys chewing up their tires on pavement and blaming Rivian.

I’m sure that the possibility of creating damage to the vehicle or drive train weighed into Rivian’s decision. However, I do recall reading or hearing, somewhere, that there was a philosophical component to their decision.

I would like , I have no problem replacing race comp tires on my other car.
