Even without inquiring about the rates I know mine will go way up because it's bigger, heavier, and worth way more than what it will be replacing. So I would say it depends on what your baseline is.

Under $700 increase for 6 mo on Progressive. This is inline with our other vehicles for our coverage and situation. R1T, R2, Tesla MY three drivers including teen.

OP- agreeing with others that there are a lot of variables, I know you're just trying to get a sense for what to expect vs what you have. You can now price it on most sites by using 2027 R2. I was pleasantly surprised. For comparison, I have a 2023 i4 and it is about $80 more per 6 months to switch to the R2. I used the Geico site to run #'s.

You can play around with coverages in the Progressive app. Removing my 2023 Model Y and adding a 2027 R2 is $84 more (for 6 months) with the same coverage options.

On a quote, I'm trading in a 2018 BMW and rates are only going up about $50 per month. Not bad honestly. Your rates may differ but definitely shop around. The whole "EVs are more expensive to insure" is mostly a myth and like everything else, varies from carrier to carrier and vehicle to vehicle.

With Geico, my rates are going down 20% swapping R1 for R2.

The biggest thing keeping me from an R1 was insurance rates. There's a lot to say for the repairability of the R2, especially concerning what should be a minor accident!

It will be a lot easier to repair. It was designed that way, and per a mobile service tech they were asked for grievances on how to make repairs easier, etc, during the development process. So here's hoping that's all true.

That's simply not a true blanket statement. We traded a 2019 Tesla 3 LR for the Rivian. It's value was mid-20s, and the Rivian...way more, and heavier, and all that. Our insurance cost went down. Similarly when we traded in a BMW for the Tesla, cost also went down.

Insurance is not comparable person to person or location to location.....
This. When I compare cost to friends, we see wildly varying rates even with everyone being somewhat similar in demographics. I don't get it. Also Progressive is 1/3 the cost of many other quotes I got.

Another notable thing is that adding the full glass coverage on my policy would nearly double the cost. It was the same cost as a new windshield every 18 months or so. I haven't needed glass in nearly ten years, so statistically that's a losing deal.

It is nearly impossible to compare insurance rates and shouldn't be done as the variables are infinite. Best to just discuss overall companies you've found to be cheaper, so I will say I've found Progressive to be remarkably cheaper for the same coverage vs. all the other guys - Geico, USAA (surprisingly), State Farm, etc. Even when my rates have gone up a lot with Progressive (just inflation, no accidents) they were still so much cheaper than others.

I just asked USAA for a ballpark quote and they gave me $530 a month. The R1S quote was about $530 as well. A few months ago, they quoted me $270. This was after they raised my insurance to $200 a month on a car worth $8,000 now. I'm going to have to switch as they are getting out of control. Out of my almost 20 years of driving, I've only made 1 claim and it was a minor repair. It's not just me right? That's high or am I crazy.
