Is Bosch Quad going away?

I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on my R1s and I prefer the quad motor for all the reasons. Will Rivian move away from the Quad over time then I’m stuck with legacy tech.

They will replace the quad motors with in-house design, but don’t think quad will ever go away.

I sure hope not. If they did that they would have to abandon their "stay adventurous" mantra and replace it with something like "stay typical". This would also require changing all of the Rivian shirts and jackets. You could then wear a sweat shirt with "stay typical" in large letters across the front.

Rivian’s plan all along was to switch to using their own motors. Quad is not going away.

The Bosch will be going away, but it's a moot point from a current buyer's perspective. I wouldn't worry about it because there is a federal mandate that parts must be available for ten years minimum after the last car of that model is sold. So you are in the same boat everyone else is, perhaps better, because Bosch as a company probably won't be going out of business any time soon. It looks like Rivian will make it, too, so your risk probably won't be as high as it was a couple of years ago when many of us got our trucks.

As someone with a Bosch quad, I'd tell you not to hesitate if you want it. It is the best vehicle I've ever owned, and that's saying something, as I've had some pretty good cars. It compares favorably to my wife's new i4 M50, and I'd pick my R1 over any other truck on the market without thinking twice.

Bosch has been making electric motors for a very long time and is as reliable as it gets. At this point, I prefer having the Bosch motors in my truck because I know they’re as good as it gets. I expect the Enduro motors to prove high quality and reliable as well, but Bosch’s track record is exceptional.

It’s ironic that the dual motor has more range, and I find the extra range enables more adventures. The quad is barely able to do what I want in the mountains. In the winter, the quad range is pretty bad (212 miles max in winter).

+1, I am a fan of the differential.

I would also like regen to not be so very much limited in the mountains. Often I can’t recapture my 5000+ feet of potential energy on the downhill because regen is only partially available, even with a very low SoC. The car should be able to do full regen continuously at 32° F ambient.

My use case is simple: drive way up in the mountains; do fun stuff; drive back home. When driving back, the truck is cold and regen is significantly impaired for miles and miles. That limits how far into the mountains I can go and still return without a tow.

I'm not sure if the quad is here t stay or not. It's possible Rivian will find that they can deliver as much performance and better off road performance with a dual set up as they continue to develop the enduro drivetrains.

That said, I have the Bosch quad and I'm not worried about it being "old tech". There are lots of Bosch electric motors with high mileage on the road and going strong.

Allegedly dropping Bosch for internal quad. Still an unsubstantiated rumour.

QM is the halo vehicle. As a few have pointed out, in the high off camber low coefficient friction scenarios, a diff is advantageous in DM. But for everything else, and all the uses I have for my Rivian, I love the advantages of the QM.

Also keep in mind the longer warranty of the QM. That has value both to original owner but also to potential resale value down road.

Definitely don't fear the QM....or the DM for that matter...they are both awesome and each has its target market. Just have to figure out which you prefer.

Rivian won't be running away from the Bosch made motors even after they stop using them in production at some point eventually.

What exactly does this mean to you and why the concern? As with any technology, anything you buy today will be replaced by something better tomorrow. That doesn't mean today's product isn't great or that it won't be supported tomorrow. You can either spend your life waiting for the next best thing or buy today and enjoy life now.
