When charging in my garage with a Tesla wall charger, when I plug it in it always says that it failed to connect. I have to unplug, then plug it back in a second time and then it always seems to work. Not sure why it won’t connect the first time

It appears Rivian is sending emails to Gen 2 owners experiencing this problem. This was posted on Reddit.

Is anyone else having Level 2 charging issues after the last update? I have had several failures to initiate charging. The error seems to be on the Vehicle side, not the charger side. Granted, it has been very cold here, but I have charged before in this weather with no issues.
Just received an email and text from Rivian - "Issue prevents certain R1 vehicles from AC charging at home or with Level 2 chargers when in colder weather. Expect OTA update in a week to fix but in the mean time

"To charge at home or on a Level 2 charger before receiving the update:
  1. Precondition your battery to at least 40°F (Energy app > Prepare for fast charging > Prepare battery).
    • To locate your vehicle’s battery temperature, go to Drive Modes then swipe left on the center display.
  2. Perform a vehicle reset (hold Left Thumb Control of the steering wheel and Hazard Lights button for 15 seconds)
  3. Plug in the charger.
If this doesn’t work, we recommend preconditioning your battery to a higher battery temperature and trying again.

DC fast charging is not affected, and you can find compatible fast chargers from your vehicle’s Center Display or in the Rivian app."

I did have issues charging at a remote Colorado Mtn resort using Tesla Universal charger with a cold battery (about 35F) last week. Also I had issues with the Rivian Adv network in Montrose - all 6 errored out.

Just got the same email - good to see this year they are acking and responding swiftly.

Looks like we also got a date for .46 coming out - unless this is just a patch :)

i started having a problem when we got to single digits in michigan. warming the battery to 40 didnt help, i had to get it over 50. also, i noticed that bringing my charger inside so it was also warm, was necessary to get the charging to initiate. i guess it didn’t like cold electrons. even when it does charge, it caps at 2.7, so i’m glad it will be fixed quickly.

r1s gen 2 quad LE. Pion power flex level 1/2 charger.

I just restarted mine at 36F and it started charging at the full 40A my charger supports. I just did the prepare step while sitting here, not driving around.

Pretty curious bug if the temperature is inconsistent.

Try putting your HPWC in compatibility mode. Mine worked fine for a year when set to "all vehicles" and then just started getting that same problem 4-6 weeks ago. Compatibility mode fixed this.

Interesting about moving the charger inside. I noticed this cold charging issue early on before any other forum posts were made. I was Level 1 charging at a VRBO so the truck was parked outside in single digit weather and snow falling. In my trouble shooting I thought maybe snow or ice got into the plug. I bought the charger inside and used a hair dryer to try and dry out the plug. It seemed to work but then I wrote it off as a fluke when all the other forum posts were made and I continued to have issues after that. Maybe charging pin temperature is also a factor?????? Temp sensor near the plug???

Yes, it’s in compatibility mode For all vehicles. Still initially does it. Easily remedied by replugging in but just have to be aware so you don’t come back In the morning and your car hasn’t charged

Just another data point, I had to pre-condition to 60 and then reboot. After that, it took a charge.

Btw. Didn't receive a text message or email or phone call or smoke signals that this was an issue. I had to spend an hour on the phone with roadside at 2am and 13'F freezing my ions off before I did a Google search and asked roadside point blank if this was a software issue. Only then did they suggest the preheat.

I haven't received any comms about it either. '22 R1T gen 1 here. What's your vehicle/generation? I'm really hoping the fix is included for g1, because I think it's only mentioned as a gen 2 fix so far. 🫤

That's because it's supposedly only an issue on Gen 2 vehicles. I've not seen any reports that this particular bug is affecting Gen 1 vehicles.
