I see the pictures for the R2 and R3 showing charging with a NACS port on the passenger side. Can anybody explain why you would want to charge on the passenger side? To me this would just make charging more difficult at home and even at superchargers.

It would seem to me that all things considered that left rear or left front would work our best.

It would work well in a garage if your charger is in the middle of the front wall. You could reach both your R1T and your R2 with one charger. Assuming you have both of course.

It could be that these prototypes have been around a while and not representative on the shipping product since the NACS announcement, the location of the charge ports may change before actual production.

Left rear would be ideal to match Tesla, but passenger right is going to handle a supercharger just fine. As it stands, front driver side isn’t conducive for Tesla Superchargers short reach.

How would this position be better than all the way on the front corner?

I stand corrected. OP stated passenger side, I looked at some pictures and it’s the REAR passenger side….not sure how this makes it any different than what we have today.

I think this was designed so the R2's could back into existing RAN stations rather than being designed for Tesla Supercharging Stations.

Picture below is for quick visual reference. R1's pull in forward, R2's back in.

We'll see if anything changes on the final production model.

Imo it should be on the drivers side. Either the front or back and ideally front and back like the Porsche. The driver is the person going to plug it in and he is on the drivers side. I am thinking more about home charging than super charging however since that’s going to be used more often.
I guess passenger side might make sense for street charging but that’s the only thing that could make sense to me.

Only thing I miss about our Audi EtronS was charging ports on both sides.

They have got to change it. It is the worst place in that it is farthest from the driver. And not Tesla SC compatible which is the best charging network.

Seems odd to me, but here's the best rationale I could come up with: For RAN and Supercharger access, it's not any worse than front left (which is what R1 has), you just have to back into the space instead. Plus it makes overnight "curbside" charging easier, which will be more important at lower price points. R2 and R3 will see a higher percentage of buyers who don't have a garage to charge in.
