This leaving pets and toddlers in a car should become leaving toddlers/pets at home.
Two wrongs never make a right.

EVs are still a nascent technology. Vast majority of people, the well-meaning ones included, do not know about, let alone understand this Dog Mode/Pet Mode feature that makes EVs so special and great for traveling with our beloved pets. It may take a very long time for the populace to learn about it.

A person already hunted me down and approached me about my two dogs left inside my R1S on a hot day. She meant well; explained to her why my pets were fine, but she still remained unconvinced.

Using the most polite choice of words, what I do now is print out in big letters on a 8.5x11 sheet of paper placed on the dash that A/C is on; that my pets are very comfortable; and to bugger off.

Wow you are a more patient person that I am. I would not tolerate people asking me about my dogs in the car. I have done it dozens of times and have never been approached or attacked about leaving my dogs in the car. But maybe that's because I live in an EV friendly state so people have seen EVs with pet mode.

I just don't understand why people have the time to look into your car, see an animal, and call the cops but can't see the screen. I guess they are just ignorant.

Think of it from Rivian’s liability point of view. It doesn’t take much for someone who doesn’t pay attention to SOC to start Pet Comfort at 10% and potentially run the battery down being away for longer than expected, and then harming their pet accidentally. If I was Rivian I’d put the same restriction that you cannot turn this on below a certain SOC.

We live in rural Illinois. We take our German Sheppard Max with us everywhere in our R1T. We have been approached by a few uneducated individuals that don’t understand what EVs are, let alone a Rivian. We bought the vinyl decals Abstract Ocean sells to display when truck is in pet mode.

I don’t mind the discussions. It’s honestly a reason we love our Rivian and should be a great point to make to help promote ev adoption in rural areas.

Educate the uneducated on evs….and we just might change some minds.

Why risk trapping your dog in the car with a dead battery so you can grab a bite and a beer? Go charge first just to be safe you sound like you could use A nanny!

Have used Pet Mode many times; this incident was a one-off, no biggie. Funny, she still suggested that I get a windshield screen.

I do try to avoid using my sign on the dash as much as possible because it may draw unwanted attention to my dogs, which always get on their very comfy bed in the entire middle seat and go to sleep. It also helps that I have all my windows tinted to the maximum darkness allowed. Very hard to see inside.

As with the reply from they owner in rural Illinois, we have no choice. Our round trip from home is 12 hours IF the ferry runs, 28 if it doesn't. So our dogs always travel with us. Besides, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one constantly checking the truck temp via the app while relying on Pet Mode.

In our first year of Rivian ownership we were accosted by an elderly couple when we left our dogs in the car while at a plant nursery. As we returned to the car he was headed back from having someone page us. And she was standing at the passenger door telling people nearby how concerned she was.

I tried to explain it was an EV and that the AC was on but she was having none of it. "That car is not even running".

She was just too upset to listen. So in an attempt to show her I pointed at the screen inside the vehicle. As I look inside to show her I realized, in that particular light, it was indeed difficult to see and read.

While I believe that is an exception, we bought the stickers for the windows and have not had anyone yell at us since. But I think the stickers could still be better as it the ones we have does not really address the vehicle being an EV.

And BTW, tolerance is not a bad thing.....the situation is not always as it seems.

We travel with our dog all the time and use Pet Mode. I have yet to have anyone say anything. Likely because our pooch is usually curled up snoozing....and can't be bothered to get up and check out strangers next to the car.😂

Tesla's Dog Mode will not turn on if 20% or less SOC, either. Neither will Sentry Mode.
Would it have helped to lower your windows some instead? Have seen a few ICE owners do just that. Not for me and my dogs.
Honestly it wasn't hot enough to justify cooling, I was more trying to prevent my dog from setting off the alarm. I just ran AC remotely as a test because I thought it was funny it would allow one thing but not the other.

I do appreciate the tip about leaving the A/C on instead and that it may set off the alarm. Good to know.

It's 90+ out and when I hit the climate action on seats it a lot of times defaults to heated seats which just blows my mind. I also randomly check the hvac settings and notice that the 2nd row floor cooling changes and I have to toggle it back on and then switch to front, move the vent around and save settings. Software updates revert all the camera settings and can't remember the original setting post update.

They have a lot of goofy software bugs imo.

Yeah what if you accidentally stayed at the restaurant for 8 hours instead of 1/2?
