Opal (our R1T) is experiencing a problem with her tailgate sensor. Her tailgate is closed and locked but it is showing as open on the driver screen. It does not seem to be a problem with the locking mechanism. is secure and in place. I have opened and closed her tailgate numerous times trying to correct this issue with no success. There must be a sensor somewhere that is malfunctioning.

Does anyone here on the Forums know how to correct this issue? Thanks for your help.

I had this problem last summer but mine was obviously not latching on the passenger side as I could pull on the closed tailgate and it would move very slightly on that side but was rock solid on the driver's side.

I had to take it into the SC and they replaced both latches (was told this was their practice even though only one side is actually broken) under warrantee.

If the locking mechanism appears to be working, it's worth trying soft, then hard resets. That may clear the error if it's temporary.

It’s the latch and Rivian will replace it. I had this problem right after delivery and a year later latch went bad again but it would not open the tailgate.

My tailgate stopped latching on the right (passenger) side last week, eerily close to a recent software update. My dad's truck also claims the tailgate is "open" when closed. Anyone else getting this lately? The next service availability isn't until end of March in Seattle and all the proximity sensors around the vehicle are "off" until this is resolved. I read about over-torqued bolts damaging the latching mechanism but I find it hard to believe this is the case given date of onset (1+ year post delivery). Appreciate any additional insight.

Opal is the same way with all the sensors showing off. Opal's tailgate mechanisms are solidly locked. We have had Opal for almost two years. I have tried both a hard and a soft reset. This has not corrected the problem, but the tailgate no longer shows as open on the driver screen picture of the truck.

All of this has occurred since the .47 update.

Our 2023 R1T's tailgate latches failed over about a two-month period. Portland SC replaced both latches Friday.

If I understand correctly what I was told, the factory didn't torque all tailgate latches correctly. Re-torquing fixed the problem only temporarily. Being incorrectly torqued is bad for the latches.

Current practice is to replace failing tailgate latches, at least on R1Ts the same age as ours.

I hope this helps!

I've gone through 3 new latches, they want to bring it to the SC for troubleshooting after the latest failure. All have been mobile fixes so far.

Do you have the actuator inside the side of the bed, or the latch on the tailgate?

I've learned how to pry the bed liner open to pull the manual release when the actuator fails, and have removed the actuator entirely since it's kaput.

Our tailgate drops with the press of a button on top of the left side-rail of the bed, near the back of the truck. There are no tailgate controls on the tailgate itself.

Does that answer your question, @Riviot?

Very best wishes!

The latch is the metal U shaped piece on each end of the tailgate. The actuator is what holds the latch when the tailgate is closed, and releases it when the button is pressed.

When you said, the factory didn't torque all latches correctly, which part did you mean? And which bolt needs retorquing?

I noticed that my manual tonneau cover was causing this warning to come up. The rubber wasn’t compressed enough, causing the gate to appear not closed

Thank you for this information. I have a tri-fold rigid tonneau cover. I will check it to see if it is somehow interfering with the tailgate sensor.

I wish I knew, @Riviot. I'm repeating the words they told me at Portland SC when they returned the keys of our (apparently correctly fixed) R1T. So I can't help further. Maybe others can.

Very best wishes!

It could be preventing both latches (tailgate) from catching on the actuators (truck bed side). That's my perpetual issue, one actuator gets stressed from a latch not spaced correctly, so it wears out the actuator pretty quick. My solution was slamming the tailgate shut and worked for a while, despite the dent I gave it.

This is apparently my problem also. I now have a mobile service appointment for February 12th. In the meantime, I am just driving her with the "red tailgate open" warning on the driver screen and the inactive warning alerts.
