Replace 12V Battery, Car Bricked *Update*

*** Update*** Just received my car from the Miami service center. Excellent experience, next day service, replaced the 12V battery ***
Hey guys. I hopped in my car this morning and it was completely dead. Checked the app, 176 miles of range, and says you must replace the 12V battery. ??? 2023 R1S quad. Can you guys shed some light on the issue?
I just did the recent update 4-5 days ago.

Uhh, the 12v battery needs replaced?...

In all seriousness, there have been some issues with the electronics that top-up the 12v battery. Definitely call service ASAP and they will take care of you.

Seems like your 12V battery needs to be replaced, as it may have failed or the vehicle BMS let it discharge too much.

Seems like there's a reasonable chance Rivian still has an issue with 12V batteries getting drained too low during updates. Lead acid batteries shouldn't go bad after only a year or two.

Sometimes mobile service can do the replacement, but it's not always successful, unfortunately. Likely depends on the cause for the battery drain.

If it were just a failed 12v, yes. But a new 12v shouldn't fail on it's own. There are likely some parts that need to be replaced in the LV charging system.

At least you got an alert, early adopters just went out to a dead truck.

Like was said remote tech can replace batteries but if its not the batteries and its something else it may delay getting your truck back in service. I think that's probably why they want to tow it.

I got the 12V error on Sunday. Mobile service is coming tomorrow morning to fix it. I’ll report back.

I left a light charging in the 12-volt outset, which bricked the car. Jump started it with the trailer wires, but no luck getting in the hood. The Rivian tow manual showed how to unlock the hood by removing the wheel well cover (huge pain). The Tow manual only showed how to jump the 12-volt battery if you have two, so verify if you have the single or dual battery system. I confirmed the battery was not charging anymore. After getting the same size battery overnight from Amazon with posts that did not match, I ordered the Ohmmu $359 plug shipping overnight.

It was a three-day, many-hour job to fix. Rivian said they could not do this for me in two weeks and said it was not ok to leave the car dead that long, so tow it at my expense 100 miles to the nearest center. No thanks. Ohmmu has a video online on how to do this yourself.

The 12-volt battery will eventually fail and brick the car, locking it down tight. Keep a spare battery and the tools to remove the wheel well and replace the battery. Consider a scheduled replacement.

Had the exact same thing happen about a week after the last update on our 2024 R1S Quad. Had 73% battery but was bricked in the morning after a normal day of use. Service came to the house 2 days later and replaced the 12v battery. He looked at some other stuff but didn't change anything. He also couldn't explain why it died or how to prevent it in the future. It's been a week since it was replaced and no problems but it makes me nervous still. There are a lot more inconvenient places for it to have died than sitting in our garage overnight.

A few months ago I had a bad cell in the 400v battery that bricked my 12v. Rivian had to replace both under warranty. No warning. Nothing. i had 66% on the main battery after charging overnight. Drove once in the morning. Then a few hours later it was bricked In my driveway.

For future reference, do you think if the car was plugged into the at home charger overnight, that error have avoided this? It usually is but was not this time. If so, in the future I’ll just make sure it’s plugged in every night before bed.
