The tell tale sign of a failing 12v battery is the vampire drain starts to increase over time, mine was nearing 3% a day before it died after replacement went down to 0.5% with no other changes. The VD is caused by the truck constantly waking to charge the 12v. The only negative to doing your own battery replacement is you can't reset the error message without taking it to Rivian and I'm sure if you did take it to them to reset they'd try voiding your warranty over it.
The video on Ohmmu's YouTube channel says just driving the vehicle after replacing the battery resets the error messages. Is that not true anymore? I've got a 12 month old R1S and it's impossible to get appointments at the Denver SC within 4 months so considering proactive replacement.

It's just amazing how many 12v batteries Rivian has had to replace over time.. and under warranty. This must be costing them a fortune! I'm sure some of the replacements are covered by the warranty from the battery manufacturer C&D Technology, but what about all the labor costs, etc?

The first time my vehicle would charge and not report the correct charge state after unplugging. The second time I didn't have signs of any 12V problems, no exceptional vampire drain.

The Ohmmu's video says to drive the truck a few feet after the battery swap and it should clear the errors. If that doesn't work, then they will clear on your first drive. I'm thinking I may replace mine sooner (at a time of my choosing) rather than play the Rivian Battery Roulette game too much longer.

The only thing I'm wondering is about long-term review of the Ohmmu's. I'm tempted to buy a set (Dual 12v) in the future and keep them handy in my Frunk as extra insurance :D

I beg to differ; receiving exceptional service from one company doesn't make that service standard. Waiting a few weeks to even a month for most services is pretty standard these days for many different manufacturers.
But what I got from Honda wasn’t exceptional. It was what they do for everyone. It’s just expected.

well, here's some amazing props to Rivian service.

I live about 3 miles from the nearest Service Center, called service, they said there's a mobile unit nearby, i said sure, come on by. He jump-started the car to open frunk, replaced 12v battery.

From service call to mobile visit and battery replacement completion including checking car diagnostics = 53 mins... wow!

Mine was a single 12v swap, not dual. The safest way was to detach the high voltage cutoff plug (it's clearly marked with a label on driver's side near 12v battery location).
this should be the norm. excellent service

I like your thinking on buying spares to have on hand. I wonder if I am pushing my luck with no failures after 18 months and 30k miles. Or, does that record say I got lucky with a good pair of batteries.

Just posted a poll to see if we can come up with a failure rate from the community here:

I will say, for what it’s worth, that my 2014 Prius V’s 12V battery fizzled out in 2018. That’s a car that had 10 years of development and refinement at that point when mine was made. It wasn’t under any part of the warranty either.

I had the whole 'exit the vehicle now - toxic fumes error and I called in and they told me if I didn't feel safe I should drive to a Service Center. if you can drive it and you have the time you should go. it's like a 45 min repair and fairly easily done in the parking lot.

I emailed C&D technologies today and asked about a replacement 12 V AGM battery. They emailed back that they no longer supply batteries to Rivian and have none to sell. My guess is their product was not great and Rivian now gets the 12V from some other company. If anyone gets a replacement can you please post a picture, assuming there are identifying labels on the battery, indicating make, model, part number, etc. I would like to replace my own when needed. I installed a charging cable and access to the battery is very easy

I seriously think the parts Rivian were able to obtain were just not the best or optimal in the beginning. Something that can only improve with time and probably already has.

I got mine replaced last month but couldn't see any Part# without further disassembly (just removing the cowl cover).

I might have to take one for the team and perform more surgery on it to get pictures :)

Closing this out and thanks to you fine people, it's resolved much quicker than expected. I called Service and explained the situation, they then prioritized me and dispatched a mobile service truck for the next day.

Von from the South San Francisco SC arrived on time and completed the task in about 30 minutes. He then spent another 20 doing a courtesy inspection.

Very pleased with my first service experience in my 15 months of ownership.

I wonder how long Rivian knew about this. In March 2024 ago, my R1S when in for minor things to get fixed, they replaced the 12V without tell me. I had to find out in the invoice. It didn't say why. My is an Aug 23 Delivery.
