Tesla requires the premium data sub in order to stream netflix, yt, etc and also view sentry mode video. You can connect to WiFi though and stream without the premium data sub. If its worth it or not depends on what they plan to charge for it. I think the AA/ACP mirroring should be available regardless.

$10/mo or $100/yr
Thank you for that information. Hopefully, Rivian will match that price. I could feel good about doing $100 a year.

Its not a feature now so I can see them charging for it.
I also believe the purchase agreement says everything we have now is/was beta and can be changed for later, right?

I am good with paying whatever a industry comparable cost is for vehicle services appropriate to the features.

I really wonder what they mean by Screen Mirroring in the context of Internet subscription services. Is this mirroring what's on the screen over the Internet to the fleet manager? Or maybe something like Chromecast (or whatever Amazon is using.) Or is it AA/CP? Hmmm...
There was a rumor a while back that Rivian was going to add Airplay 2 support, so you can cast videos from your iPhone to the screen. For non-screen mirroring, Airplay 2 works similar to Chromecast, in that it's not actually streaming from your phone, but directly from the web (and your phone is just passing along the stream URL), so that makes sense as to why a data connection would be required for that. I haven't heard any rumors about Chromecast, but the same would be the case there if they supported it.

I'm generally very anti-subscription. But a generous reading is that this list is "Celluar data and a bunch of things over cellular data" such as streaming music and video. That would be reasonable to charge a subscription fee for.

On to criticisms/caveats: (1) of course, they should let you tether the car to your own phone/cellular connection for free. (2) obviously, mirroring your phone to a screen should not require a subscription. At the worst, if Rivian really wants to nickel and dime people for that, it should be purchasable as a one-time "app" download.

AirPlay 2 would be awesome!

About what I would expect.

I think it’s a reasonable expectation for any R1 to still have a quality user experience for audio for those who don’t choose the subscription. I’d be pretty annoyed if this limits choices to AM/FM + Bluetooth.

IIRC Tesla does have some white-label streaming service that doesn’t require the paid data plan. It’s conceptually similar to Spotify, but clearly lower budget.

I have a feeling they’ll bundle ambient lighting control (color) with this subscription as it’s the only thing that explains why it hasn’t become available yet.

I agree with those saying we shouldn't read too much into the options offered for fleet sales. Their needs and wants are often different than those of the private side. Still interesting to see what they put together. It at least gives us an idea of the scale of options that are on the table...

Perhaps it would be Miracast, which is an open Wi-Fi Alliance protocol, and some automobiles do have this functionality already to "cast" to the display. Miracast does not require an internet connection; it can function Wi-Fi Direct.
