I run a Gen1 Quad R1S. Owned from new and I’ve put 21k on it. I’m not really interested in self drive but, whilst I’ve still got good value in the car and before I add too many more miles I was wondering if it’s worth trading to a Gen2 Dual. I like the idea of 400+ miles and the updated tech. Thoughts? What do you all think? Stupid idea and keep the Quad? I’ll admit I love this car. Had zero problems. Maybe that’s a sign. If it ain’t broke…:

The max pack on the Gen 2's (assuming you go max) is only 10 kWh bigger. So about 7% larger. Run your Gen1 in conserve mode with the appropriate tires, and you'll get close to that range.

For better autonomous driving, just look at the threads regarding Comma.Ai. It is so much better in daily usage that I find myself using it when I wouldn't have before. I say that even though you say you aren't that interested in it. It is so useful that I actually use it more than I do in my Teslas.

What tech is interesting to you in the Gen 2? For me the things I am most interested in are the matrix lights, and the new quad if it actually is released, as everyone needs 1,000 HP! Most of the other tech doesn't matter that much to me. I would like the launch mode of the tri/quad though.

If you have no issues with yours, I'd say hold on. Not sure if it is worth the price of the upgrade. I'd be waiting for more significant changes such as an 800 volt architecture, big brakes, quieter heat pump, a more usable frunk like one you could sit in, and all the other things on my wish list.

Keep in mind that this new tech hasn't been proven yet and there could be some new issues. The G1 trucks issues are pretty well known at this point. It looks like the G2's could have some of the same issues like half shaft noise, and likely will have some new ones as well.

You'll still have decent value in your truck at 40 or 50k miles so you have time to wait.

Only things that interest me in the Gen 2 cars is the matrix headlights, the new autonomy platform hardware, and to an extent the cameras. Everything else is pretty much the same.

Under the hood stuff like consolidating computers/wiring in Gen 2 cars is the real benefit.

What I hate about Gen 2 is the electronic door latches. Good luck getting Grandma out of the rear seats if the vehicle is on fire and the power is out.

I’m in a similar, yet different, quandary as well. I have a Gen1 R1T and am contemplating a switch to a Gen2 R1S : trade-in + credits actually exceed what I paid for the truck (amazing!) and my girls (wife+kids) all prefer the SUV over the truck. I simply want more range than my knobby-tire, large pack truck can deliver. Still—I love the R1T in its forest green/forest edge spec (no longer available) and really don’t need a new vehicle. Like the OP, my truck has been trouble free albeit a bit of a rattle box.

@OP — one other consideration might be the improved suspension on the Gen2 R1S; as I’m not an owner (of an R1S) I cannot comment first-hand however I’ve had friends say its a noticeable upgrade.

The eminent sunsetting of the tax credits was a big thing that pushed me to go through with upgrading my 23 QM R1S (couple of weeks out from delivery). The House plan released yesterday gives the personal credit until 12/31/26, but has the commercial credit (and the leasing loophole) terminating 12/31/25.

I'm not in as good of a position as you, but I felt ~$5,000 in depreciation on my R1S after tax credits, incentives, etc. was more than fair for over 32,000 mi and 20 months of ownership.

Suspension is improved over GEN1 R1S for sure. Rides about the same as our GEN1 T with updated jounce lines and dampers.

Careful what you wish for on range. We're not getting anything close to advertised range on our GEN2 R1S. They have changed the way range is advertised/estimated compared to GEN1 and it's nearly impossible to achieve in the real world other than strictly in town driving.

Our GEN2 is still a rattle box. Going into service next week with 4 rattle locations and counting.

I have 31k miles… I think I will get an R2 for my wife and hold out for a Gen 3 R1S (whenever thats available). I view the Gen2 improvements as incremental and I'd really love to see if Rivian can get to faster charging… thats my only complaint. Not sure if that means 800v architecture or just better battery cooling, but I'd love to see the 10%-70% time on a large pack be reduced from 25-30 minutes to 15-20.

Glad to see the leasing loophole closed. That ballooned the cost of the credit and worked against the intent which had income and price limits and a built in America requirement.

Since it works, drive it till it drops...at that point there will be lots of really cool new models to choose from.

No. The hardware and software are not improved. There is no "autonomy" offering. Handling over bumps is still very erratic. Steering tuning is off at both low speeds and high speeds. On highways, the vehicle has trouble tracking straight. Interior materials quality is worse than Gen 1 and the computing and networking changes have lead to software issues every time there is a software update. Every. Single. Time.

...and don't get me started on the sound system.

But the dynamic roof glass is nice.

I should have picked up a lightly used Gen 1. Don't believe the hype on Gen 2, it's not all that and a bag of chips. Unless the chips are stale, crushed and the bag was open when you bought it and most of the chips are missing. Maybe you're left with some crumbs and chip dust.

Same. My Gen1 was repurchased by Rivian because of extensive issues and time in service. Only 3.5 months into my Gen2 TriMax and it is an absolute trainwreck compared to my Gen1 repurchased R1T.

Sorry to hear that, a real shame as they have had time and opportunity to improve assembly and build quality.
