No. The hardware and software are not improved. There is no "autonomy" offering. Handling over bumps is still very erratic. Steering tuning is off at both low speeds and high speeds. On highways, the vehicle has trouble tracking straight. Interior materials quality is worse than Gen 1 and the computing and networking changes have lead to software issues every time there is a software update. Every. Single. Time.

...and don't get me started on the sound system.

But the dynamic roof glass is nice.

I should have picked up a lightly used Gen 1. Don't believe the hype on Gen 2, it's not all that and a bag of chips. Unless the chips are stale, crushed and the bag was open when you bought it and most of the chips are missing. Maybe you're left with some crumbs and chip dust.
Yep, same here. Convinced my wife we needed to swap her car for a GEN2 R1S. Not the experience we were expecting! Still have our GEN1 R1T and it's a much more solid and better built vehicle overall.

I like the G2 but not enough to change from my G1. If youre not experiencing any issues-continue enjoying the car. Cheers.

I’m sure if you want to upgrade you’ll find plenty of takers for your Gen1. 😎

I run a Gen1 Quad R1S. Owned from new and I’ve put 21k on it. I’m not really interested in self drive but, whilst I’ve still got good value in the car and before I add too many more miles I was wondering if it’s worth trading to a Gen2 Dual. I like the idea of 400+ miles and the updated tech. Thoughts? What do you all think? Stupid idea and keep the Quad? I’ll admit I love this car. Had zero problems. Maybe that’s a sign. If it ain’t broke…:
Money burning a hole in your pocket? Send it to me, I'll fix it for yah.

If you actually sat down and wrote down list of improvements, you'd see right away most of the changes were done to lower production cost and boost profit margin. All good from a company sustainability POV. Performance, range and user benefit gains are all fairly minor.

The short list of things that are actually better from user POV (and if any of it is important to you):
  • Adaptive/matrixing headlights (not like gen 1 beam spread is lacking? it's just older tech)
  • Higher resolution cameras (significantly better, but not like gen 1 cams are completely useless)—aftermarket dash cams are still better at catching readable plates and recognizable faces.
  • Higher performance ceiling of CPUs (i.e. potential for true point-to-point hands-free autonomous driving)
  • Potential for fuller Apple Watch support (which Rivian has yet to deliver for gen 2)
  • Potentially slightly lower cost of collision repair (and insurance)
  • If optioned, a glass roof that can be switched between clear and translucent.
So far, with each OTA, Gen 2 seems to have a lot more software gremlins.

Technology is changing rapidly. I would wait or lease the next one.

Suspension is improved over GEN1 R1S for sure. Rides about the same as our GEN1 T with updated jounce lines and dampers.

Careful what you wish for on range. We're not getting anything close to advertised range on our GEN2 R1S. They have changed the way range is advertised/estimated compared to GEN1 and it's nearly impossible to achieve in the real world other than strictly in town driving.

Our GEN2 is still a rattle box. Going into service next week with 4 rattle locations and counting.
I have a 2024 R1T Dual Motor. I had the jounce line retrofit done..... is there a different damper than the one that came with mine.

Not sure if there was an updated version of the dampers. My two fronts were replaced pretty early on as they were leaking. Our VIN ~15k delivered 12/22. Haven't had any other issues with them since replacement.

I have Gen1 R1T Quad Launch Edition. At this point it makes zero sense to trade in as I bought mine for $73k. I am concerned about repairs and maintenance after the warranty expires so I may end up selling but not worth upgrading to Gen2 with a $30k-$40k price difference for a Tri with similar specs, let alone the new Quad.

Sorry to hear that, a real shame as they have had time and opportunity to improve assembly and build quality.
It’s even worse that @kyledmb is not alone. My trimax replacement for a bought back gen1 quad has been nothing short of a complete disaster. I’d walk through fire to get my original gen1 truck back at this point.

Putting all the issues aside - like other have posted here the gen1 builds just feel more solid than gen2 (and I’ve got 3-4 examples in our team at work to compare across).

Mine are noisy when cornering over uneven surfaces, but they have been consistent since day 1.

I figured an improved version would be released at some point.

Yeah unfortunately the damper replacement didn't do much for those noises. Just stopped the car from 'deflating' overnight. Pretty standard across the board for R1 to make a lot of suspension noise on uneven surfaces/cornering. Jounce line took out the squeaky noise on cornering. Still plenty of subtle clunks/pops left, but I can live with that for the capability.

@meshugy what did we learn about dampers? I fed you all the info, but you understood it all better than me haha.

I think @Riviot has ability to look up part numbers.
Rivian R1T R1S Should I upgrade my Gen1?? 1000003899

I find it funny that I go down military supply rabbit holes all day at work, then in my spare time, go down Rivian apply rabbit holes. I think I have a problem.

I have a 2022 Quad R1T. Took a dual standard R1s for an overnight test drive. First thing my wife said was how janky the doors were. She is right. The thud you get from the Gen 1 is missing.

The Gen 2 also rattles like crazy from multiple different locations in the cabin. That would annoy me to no end.

The panel gaps were horrendous, though the wind noise much less than my truck and the Gen 2 was overall quieter especially the motors.

The steering on the Gen 2 was somehow off. I find it hard to explain, but when I would do a right turn I’d somehow go into the next lane when trying to center the wheel. This happened on more than one occasion.

The ride quality of the Gen 2 R1s wasn’t too bad in all purpose. Pretty close to my R1T. In the lowest setting, it was almost undrivait was so harsh.

the sound system was pretty good. Not as good as the Meridian, bust not as bad as what others seem to say.

The Enahance drivers plus was great. The auto lane changing was awesome and I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. The Drivers plus on Gen 1 is almost useless sadly.

If they bring back the cheap leases on the dual standard, it may be worth upgrading. Not sure it is at the moment.
