I was on the freeway in no particularly harsh conditions yesterday when both screens (and I believe the fans/AC although I was a little stressed so I'm not certain) went dead spontaneously. It was surprisingly unnerving for everything to go dark and quiet.

But, the interesting and good part is apparently the car is engineered in such a way that none of the controls went dead (steering, acceleration). Before I arrived at the next exit the system had begun to come back online starting with a white screen with the mph displayed. Within a minute, everything was back on and playing Spotify at the exact spot in the song that it went dead.

I thought I'd mention it here in case anyone knows this phenomenon to be a harbinger of bad things to come, and/or just to be grateful that the car didn't just roll to a stop in the fast lane.

Sounds like you experienced an Infotainment system reset vs a full vehicle reboot.

I had a spontaneous Infotainment system reboot happen to me last year, yes it's unnerving for sure, but driving was unaffected. IDK what a full vehicle reboot would do to propulsion, steering and braking if it happened while you were at highway speed?

Mine shut down at 75 mph, coasted to the shoulder. Full system reboot and on he road again. I was on my way to have one of the computers replaced. No other issues.

Ah the joys of technology! If I were you, I'd give the service center a call and see if they can look at/download error logs for your vehicle. If it keeps happening, the more logging and details they have, the easier it will be for them to fix your issue. If you have a ECU going bad or an intermittent connector on a ECU it may be really hard to track down without a lot of historical data. I'd also want the documentation of the complaints so if this gets to be a regular thing, you have the records to show they haven't been able to fix the issue.

I’ve had this happen - it looked like a full reboot but I was driving so who knows ;-).

I’ve had a Tesla S for years and rebooting the car while driving wasn’t a big deal at all (just don’t do it while the wife is in the car, then it’s a BIG DEAL…)

I’ve had this happen once, while I was driving at about 45 mph. I freaked out, pulled to the shoulder, and thought I had bricked it. Then I realized the truck still was functioning okay, so I rolled away while it rebooted.

That would be extremely unnerving. I sure hope that Opal never does that to me.

Had the same at 75 mph. Best part is how service tried to tell me it’s only weird because it’s my first EV. Maybe a thread of Rivian service gaslighting would be fun!

I’ve been getting these intermittent reboots ever since the 27.01 update. I don’t think it’s just an infotainment reboot for me, because my drivers screen also goes mostly blank (sometimes has Rivian logo) and still shows speed.

I have a ticket in to have it looked at. I got that update the day before a road trip to Texas where it was very hot and sunny, so not sure if that’s a coincidence or that the heat did something to the truck.

Last update didn’t help as I’ve had it happen once since then too.

This usually happens right before the self destruct sequence starts. When that happens, you only have 15 seconds to get out of the vehicle.
?

? on a serious note this is nothing serious. It happens from time to time. If it starts happening frequently, then it might be time schedule Service otherwise I would say normal..

I had this happen last weekend while driving back from a ski weekend with the family. About 65mph and the screens went dark then gradually came back.

It was not a “full reset” if you were able to keep driving …
