Well, nobody complained really, the guy who gave us the tow , randomly came to that mini mart to get a snack, said he had a trailer around the corner if I wanted a tow, I asked how many pounds is the trailer, and he laughed. 50 bucks he said, 5 minutes later we were on the road to the next tesla super station. Completely empty, and none of those worked either. So that was really a test of the "Incompatible" setting. And it was correct. THe next one was a wallmart, and we didn't bother testing that too. So for 50 bucks more he agreed to just take us to each next one, and I tried charging while still on the trailer. He had the skills to pull that giant rig into any little spot. So, we ended in the RAN. at 9pm on a Sunday I was the only one. So a pretty easy solution considering how that could have gone. No complaints, and before anyone gets too worked up. I was all user error, but does show that you can't just drive wherever yet. You need to plan or adjust your advventuring.

Maybe with the 400 mile version, or eventual 500 mile versions, its a non issue, but with 300, you are still slave to being a bit better prepared, and some experience. Thanks for the help and input here.

About to pick up my R1S in less than 2 weeks. Do a lot of road tripping. Will the Rivian phone app or website help me also trip plan with “compatible“ chargers ? This poor guys experience sounds like a nightmar. Current Tesla owner

Yes, just familiarize yourself with the Nav and the charging filters.

Like @SwampNut says above, use plug share and ABRP pre trip. I also use the Electrify America and Tesla apps when I'm on the road to verify charger availability.

Not all Tesla SC's are available to Rivians and you will need an adapter for those that are.

To be clear, having a NACS port wouldn't fix this. The V2 superchargers will never work for non-Tesla vehicles. It's not a NACS issue it's a vehicle communication issue.
The "promise" by Tesla and all these automakers was that switching to their plug would open up thousands of new chargers for everyone, they failed to mention the thousands more that would never work, which does nothing to simplify the confusing state of charging. There's only 1 V3 out of the half dozen superchargers I'm ever around. It's a pretty useless feature in the end and I'm quite glad I didn't have to pay for the adapter.

No, they didn't.

that would never work
Not never, they are actively retrofitting them and just last week showed their plans and progress.

You lose a LOT compared to a Tesla, I'm surprised more people don't go back to one. Charging reliability and flexibility is just one.

There are plenty of posts of people making very long trips with little to no issues. Then again, those people had enough sense to plan ahead.

This is more a lesson of how not to operate an EV vs EV shortcomings. OP even admitted it was him, not Rivian.

Someone will probably point to this post as an example why EVs aren't viable, ignoring all of the mistakes made by the driver.

Starting to get a little cold feet. Seems like a racket just to figure out what chargers really work. Plugged in info in the plug share app and tried a trip and still not fully understanding which are "fast chargers"
Yes, just familiarize yourself with the Nav and the charging filters.

Orange ones are DCFC (DC fast charge) and the green are AC slow chargers. You can just select only compatible DCFC.

Honestly, it's really easy. I go back and forth between Phoenix, San Diego and LA all the time. I use several charging providers. I've only had one issue that was no big deal, just pissed me off at an EVgo site. Added 20 minutes to my drive and kept me from going on one more ride at Disneyland!

I love these vehicles. The range, comfort, site lines are all great in my opinion. I'm looking forward to my next one... or two!

Sam diego seems like a pain to charge because most are always full. What’s been your experience there?

It's not complicated at all.

I usually stop at Dateland. I've had good luck with the EA's and absolutely no issues with the Tesla SC.

Lately I've been using the Tesla SC in El Centro. The configuration of those chargers make 4 out of the 8 easy to use. My last trip through they were full and I just waited for one of the four to open and allowed the Tesla vehicles in front of me to charge. We eat at the Panera right there and then hit it.

In SD I stay at hotels with charger and leave topped off. When I do fast charge I use the EA's at the mall a mile or so east of USD.

Excellent info. Haven’t done the drive in the EV yet. I’ve heard el centro is usually always packed. I’ve got 370 range at 100 but those mountains won’t care lol
