Tireject is the flat repair sealant included with our vehicles. I repaired a flat with it last night. It actually worked pretty well. I'm wondering if I need to get the tire repaired at this point? The Tireject website advertises that it's a permanent repair, but the Rivian manual states it's temporary and the tire should be repaired within 100 miles.

The hole is very repairable. It's right in the center in between the treads. The question is what kind of repair can be done? I am not sure anyone will put in a patch now that the interior of the tire is covered in sealant. I am thinking maybe I just leave it or put in a plug and leave it be. With the short tread life, I am not looking at more than 12-18 months before the tire is replaced anyway. I don't think spending $500 to replace a tire with 5k miles on it makes sense. Nor does it make sense to have Rivian repair it if they are going to charge $200 to send out a mobile tech to put in a patch. Thoughts?

Take it to Discount Tire and have them plug it. Most likely they won't even charge you.

There is no Discount Tire in my area. I can plug it myself but maybe not worth the time and effort if I can find a shop to do it for $20-30.

If it were me, I’d have it patched from the inside at a tire shop. Patches are not considered temporary.
This. You have a lot riding on your tires. Get a proper patch plug combo done. This is what all the major tire shops do. Unfortunately, even if a tire looks fine on the outside, damage can be done internally and using the patch plug system also allows for the tire to be inspected on the inside to see if it's still able to be used safely.

Will shops patch a tire that has sealant in it?

Spoke to my local shop and they will patch and plug for $45. But they don't have the pucks so I need to take the wheel off and take it to them. :(

Same question I had before buying more TireJect for my other vehicles. TireJect notes somewhere on their website that the sealant wipes away easily from the inside of a tire. Their comment is that nothing should stop the patch from being applied once the sealant is wiped away but your mechanic may want you to clean the inside of the tire once removed from the wheel.

I asked my shop and they said cleaning off the sealant won't be a problem

I’m interested in hearing the results once they are done. A couple of my neighbors had issues with tire shops refusing to patch EV tires where nails punctured the wheels’ soundproofing layers.

I’m not sure why that would be an issue (apart from tire shops making more money replacing tires than repairing them).

If puncturing the sound proofing was an issue, then wouldn’t all exterior tire plugs be detrimental?

He did mention something about not wanting to compromise the soundproofing foam inside the tire if it's there. It's generally foam that is attached to the inside of the tire for sound dampening. However considering that these are just Scorpion Verde tires, and the tire seal worked from the inside, I doubt that there is a sound dampening foam attached to the inside of these tires.

On Pirelli's website they promote PNCS (Pirelli Noise Cancelling System). They show a tire with 'PNCS' embossed on the sidewall. It sounds like some tires are available in a PNCS 'version.' I'd say if it's not marked PNCS on the side wall it isn't PNCS so no foam to worry about.

I patched my 21" tire using a T-handle and self-vulcanizing bacon strip about 20k miles ago. The hole was in the center of the tread, pierced by an allen wrench. I haven't given it a thought since. That's what I'd do if I were you, but I'm sure others will point out the folly of my approach.

Something like this (first link I found on Amazon) https://a.co/d/ceju17X

Well, it does have a little musical note icon with a cross through it. But I don't see PNCS on the tire. The Pirelli website for the Rivian specific 21" doesn't say PNCS either. So it looks like it does not have it.

Anyone with Dark rims suggest that they be taken to a specialty tire center so they don't get all scratched up during a tire rotation/swap?

TireJect does provide a long term seal, but we do recommend having the tire inspected by a tire shop to ensure its safe to drive on. Our sealant is very different and much more effective than the typical fix-a-flat type product, it is not messy to clean up, it is not goopy or sticky and can easily be wiped out with a cloth during the next tire change. It also does not affect the ability to patch the tire if needed.
