My VIN is 6XXX and mine is working ok after 2 days.
Initially had a loud clunk noise when the last panel retracted but it has since become less loud and noticeable. Other than that it is working fine.

Just closing the loop on this. Got it back from service center and all was replaced. Looked like new rails on the bed and obviously the actual cover and motor assembly. Couple of points I noticed, it as has a small section (1" ish) of cover that does not retract when fully retracted and when closing, it seems to slightly slow down when reaching the end and then sealing. Overall, all good. Less than a one day process at the service center and back in action.
That's good to hear. Mine started coming apart on day 3, with the first use of the bed, a small load of cardboard to take to recycling...was happy to have the tannau to not worry about it blowing out, then when opening, it all went wrong about 2/3 open. :-(. 3rd from last panel got stuck, tried closing and panel started to separate from the other on the driver side.

I did get a call within 1 hour of opening a ticket, and am waiting to hear on next steps (that was yesterday, 5/28).

I’m passing on the $1500 powered tonneau cover. Hopefully some aftermarket companies will offer a manual cover soon.

I have ordered sans any tonneau. If we decide we want any cover, it will be a topper.

This whole cover thing reminds me of these:

Its a different technology but I absolutely NEEDED one for my pool. I made all sorts of justifications as it was 3x the cost, it was problematic from month 1. I had load issues, dirty track issues, motor issues, alignment issues. Every spring the thing costs me an arm in servicing and it’s never quite worked how it should, but when it does it is amazing. 5 years later, I finally gave up and it stays in its retracted position and unused.

Reading these threads just brings up my PTSD from the pool cover. Do I really need a powered tonneau cover? NO. But gosh darn it I still want one..FML.

I had the same repair with 1" not retracting at the end. When I asked about it, service ran around and looked at other trucks to come back and say "that's the way they all are." I am concerned the cover sticking out that inch might interfere with my motorcycle tire when loaded, or any load that wants to be up against the cab end of the bed, will end up breaking it.
Is was concerned about this situation in hauling a couch last week. Was worried it would jam the cover. It didn’t…thank goodness

Unfortunately for those of us in the next delivery windows, there really isn’t an option. You can get the power cover or you can wait indefinitely for a truck. Zero trucks have been delivered so far with the manual cover or with no cover. (At least nobody has reported receiving one so far.)

It’s very clear to me that this power cover is going to be recalled eventually. They weren’t operating them at first mile events last summer (because they broke too easily). And now they are delivering them in spite of many reports like this.

I wish they’d just ship with no cover but I guess it’s harder to retool their lines than to deal with a future recall. I suppose I just won’t open mine.

I've heard a few people say they have heard from Rivian that they are working on a redesign that will go out to people, so I agree as well.

In the meantime people should keep their tracks clean and likely apply a lubricant in them.

The day I took delivery of my R1T, the darn tonneau cover jammed and permanently stuck in a semi-closed position the first time I used it. Now I'm waiting for Rivian to replace it...

It is truly insane that people are being forced to pay for a $2k accessory they don't want, in order to take delivery of a vehicle they do want.

To me this is the equivalent of a "market adjustment" by dealers. True sign of the times when no one can make (electric) cars fast enough. Manufacturers/ dealers can charge whatever they want and a huge chunk of people will pay it because we are so (electric) vehicle starved.

I think a lot of people say they don’t want it now because they know it has issues. I think if it worked well a lot of people would want it. I was in that boat. Once I saw the flaws I wanted to remove it but ultimately didn’t. I’ll just play the long game on it and hope they roll out a fix, in the meantime I’ll cross my fingers every time I use it.

I’m on day two of ownership and mine won’t close all the way. Fortunately it gets stuck on the very last panel so it really doesn’t affect usage, but it’s sad to see such a high failure rate.

Is the 1” not normal? I’ve had that since day 1.

I assume the engineering team is looking Into the root cause of the tonneau cover failures. It’s a great factory option. Aftermarket roll up hard bed covers have a large canister that takes up cargo room.

#1 redesign fix... don't use black plastic for the cover panels. I could only imagine the warping at 110F ambient down south heat at noontime on a cloudless day. That black plastic is probably 140-150F and probably expands tremendously. There is a reason outdoor furniture is light colored....

Late to this thread, but mine jammed for the first time after three weeks of ownership. 25% open. It'll close again and if I give it a little help, it'll finish opening. What I have noticed; my problem is ENTIRELY heat related. Hot day in the sun, it'll jam. Once in the shade and cover is cool, it works fine again. That's been the pattern so far anyway.
