Strange thing for me today . Not sure how it happened - by design or some bug . I had kept the R1S for overnight charging as usual for 85% SoC . Woke up in the morning , unlocked the car and straightaway removed the charging plug. And the plug CAME OFF from the charging port . Then next second realized I hadn’t stopped charging before taking out the plug . But isn’t the plug supposed to be locked while the car is still charging(note in the snip I have attached the car had charged only 76%) . Has this happened to anyone else ?

If your charging Level 2 and the vehicle is unlocked, the plugged is not latched. There are no real concerns about unplugging an L2 session.

If you are charging at a L2 charger (like a home charger), the plug is locked/unlocked with the doors and the charge stops when you remove the plug. If you were DC fast charging and it was unlocked and able to be removed while charging...there is a problem.

My understanding is that with both J-1772 and CCS-1, pressing the button to unlatch the plug will immediately stop the charging session.

I suppose that interlock could malfunction, but it is generally protective.

Best wishes!

I have been driving an Ioniq 5 for over two years. Issuing door unlock command (from app, FOB or button on doors) will unlock charging gun from vehicle, AC or DC sessions, even if doors are already unlocked. That’s what I’ve been doing with my R1S I think. Never questioned it.

Just adding - yes. If the vehicle is unlocked, the port is unlocked. Pressing the latch on the J1772 handle signals “stop sending power”, which happens quicker than you can pull the handle out.

A few years ago, on a prior EV, the included mobile charger cord had a cheap handle where the latch was plastic, and it broke.

The car would initiate charging just fine, and deploy the “lock pin” when I locked the car. But with the end of the latch broken, the pin wasn’t actually securing it. I could pull the handle out without pushing down the latch.

Even with that huge safety problem, 240V 20A (the most that portable charger could handle, the J1772 plug is isolated enough to prevent serious arcing.

I wouldn’t dare use a 400V, 500A CCS plug with malfunctioning latch, though.

For comparison, try approaching your vehicle without your phone (to keep it locked) and try to pull that charging handle out.
