When will Rivian admit that avoiding AA/Carplay is not about providing "better" UX?

I am not an apple user, but getting into a rental car and plugging in my android phone and seeing it connect to android auto instills rage in me. I don't want my phone locked and unable to be used any time it is plugged in. Having to bring a cigarette lighter charger just to keep the phone from being locked down when the car is on is insanely frustrating. I don't know if carplay does the same thing, but that alone is a deal breaker. I am glad they don't support either.

Does Android really lock you out of your phone when connected to AA?

Apple doesn't restrict handset use while CarPlay is active. Anything the phone could do disconnected can still be done while connected.

Thanks for this! But my question is really whether the Rivian UX as it is today will allow me to stream the audio for a Zoom call to the car, or do I need to use a headset with my phone (which I have had to do in some cars)?
Over Bluetooth, yes. Not natively.

Yes. Google maps becomes completely unusable. Can't even open the app. Can't search for anything. Can't set a destination. Only solution is stopping the car and turning it off. It's terrible.

Honestly, it is similar to most automakers infotainment systems (besides Rivian and Tesla that I know of). They lock down everything whenever the vehicle is moving to the point that it is unusable.

I'd really be interested to know what, if any, conversations have happened between Rivian and Apple over it. If Apple was willing to contribute the necessary development resources to Rivian and even pay Rivian to implement it, I'd have a different opinion on whether or not they should be focusing elsewhere. But that doesn't sound like something Apple would do.
I suspect that when CP was introduced, Apple did these things. But I agree, I doubt Apple did much more than offer to set Rivian up with a Developer account and say "Here's the design guidelines and emulator, have at it."

I think some of this is setting based in apps too. Amazon music for instance had "drive mode" which just made it more dangerous with extra clicks and moving buttons. But that may have been in app specific and not tied to AA. I don't have a lot of experience with AA, typically just rental use as well.

Regarding your Audi, I’ve experienced wired CarPlay extensively on a 2016 Cadillac and 2017 Ford, both without issues in connectivity or performance. I’ve seen the same thing with many rental cars but without long-term use. We have a VW ID.4 where there are issues with wireless CarPlay so we rely on wired, but my experience with other aspects of this VW’s software leads me to believe that I shouldn’t buy another VAG car because it’s clear to me that we aren’t a good fit. The fact that an Audi, also a VAG product, has software issues doesn’t really surprise me, based on my expectations and experiences.
Android Auto works perfectly on my Audi. I've never tried CarPlay, but we do have iPhones in the house, so it could easily be tested.

It is fascinating how many people think that any tool, behavior, etc. that isn't something they do or approve of can't be a way of living in the world.

If you don't want AA/CP, fine. Don't use it when it comes out.

To OP's point, the car has an obvious gap in its feature set that could be fixed by an off-the-shelf product that is ubiquitous in other cars. Sure, it isn't perfect, nor do the standard presentations match the rest of the Rivian UI, but it is better than the [null] option we currently have.

But by all means, go on, whine more about how you don't want other people to have a thing. That works too. I'm sure you are a lot of fun.

Boy, I’m expecting a ton of Rivians to be on resale since people can’t have CP!

Reality: it’s not happening and all of this is virtue signaling

My android asks if I want it to connect to AA when I plug it in. Doesn't do it automatically. Check your settings and lost the cigarette lighter charger.

It won't come out. That's why these threads exist. People want something that doesn't and won't exist and the manufacturer has said this is the case.

That guy that wants an R1 with coil-over suspension, pissing into the wind, just like all of these threads.
