I agree generally, but to be fair, it did come with a *little* notice.

Honestly, If they told me I could get the dual motor version at the same price and same delivery date, I would have been totally alright with that. It's the battery that killed it for me ( for 48 hours only :) )

On my adventure I would love to be able to get the manual tonneau…. I would even pay my config price that included the powered one. $77550 is my config price…. Rivian could charge me $77550 and give me a manual tonneau instead of the power and I would be ecstatic. The price difference using the new configurator would be a win for Rivian.

maybe when I get contacted to finalize I will discuss this win win situation for both of us.
One option would be to just cut the power tonneau as an option all together. I could live with that. Really, the only thing I don't like about the manual cover is that it doesn't store itself as nicely as the powered one when not in place. I think that would be a smart move to save money (and warranty repairs) while not causing major upset.

If you go to the configure site for the R1S now the only interior option is the three color schemes so I don't see the 5 seater happening. My guess is the few takers for it were not worth the expense and complication of trying to manufacture the two variants.
I haven't changed my configuration once and don't intend to, but I suspect I won't be getting my 5-seater R1S now, haha. The good news is that I really wanted the front tow hooks, but not the full off-road package, and it looks like I'll likely get those thrown in on my Adventure. I'll take those as a consolation prize for having the extra seats forced upon me.
Built the way I wanted it. No changes...except I would prefer a 5-seater...oh well.
Yeah, I was configured for 5-seat version. I'm very slightly disappointed since I won't ever use the 3rd row and would rather have the extra bit of cargo space, but it's not a big deal. If simplifying to just a 7-seat version saves them money and helps them ramp production faster, then it's a small sacrifice for me to make.

I'm also glad for the tow hooks now being standard -- assuming they don't reverse that decision for those of us on "legacy" pricing. I don't need the extra shielding for $2k, but tow hooks might come in handy. I would even be willing to accept a $500 increase in the price of the Adventure trim for including those now -- speaking of ways they could have increased prices some without going all in like they did . . .

ETA: I hope they give us the chance to change interior and exterior color and wheel without moving to the new costs. I'm currently configured for Forest Green, Forest Edge, and the "bright AT" wheels. I had been meaning to change at least the wheels, and I'd really like to see the colors in person before I have to commit.

This roller coaster ride had one plus. Now I can get the my hooks without off road package. But I lost my 5 seater option. Over all an OK trade. Rivian team is probably scrambling to see which piece of frame they can eliminate to cut cost for Pre March reservations.

I hope Rivian look at this as a race against inflation to ramp up faster.

Agreed. I preferred the 5-seater, but also recognized the 7-seater would likely be better for resale. At least this isn't a decision I have to make anymore.

I'd also be willing to pay an extra $300 (currently listed price option on Explore package) for the tow hooks. I'm still fine adding on more money if they come out with a non-glass roof and factory winch too.

CS just told me you can add the hooks. $1,700 saving the way I see it.

Oh, good catch on $300. I hadn't seen that was listed as a separate option on Explore.

@godfodder0901 did you get any options or choices to change anything in your order prior to confirmation? Did they say what changes would delay your order?

I still wish they would be more concrete on what the off road package does. Like show an example of the normal battery protection vs the off road protection.

Can't wait for the configuration/cost to go back to the original state. I feel so on-edge until that happens. lol.

As a pre-order holder and investor, I would be okay if Rivian reversed the base pricing on all orders (i.e. no upcharge for quad motors or large pack), but stuck to the updated price increases for options/accessories like paint colors, tents etc.

For my LE R1S as configured pre March 1, that would mean spending $2k each on Ocean Coast or the underbody shield, which is a price increase that I would be comfortable with (<$5k) knowing that it is bringing in additional revenue for the company. Or, I could drop those options without dramatically changing the vehicle's capabilities and stick to my original price. As long as I get to make that choice, I'm a-ok.
Why would you even bring this up :CWL:
But maybe you’re one of those that really wants to pay more no matter what…

My Guide asked me if I wanted to change anything (I'm sure I technically still can) but no mention of impact. On a related note, some Adventure Gear will not be ready at launch...

What type of gear is and is not available? What's the plan for getting it to you later?

I don't want to pay more no matter what. I want the company to be successful, not just as an investor but because I want them to be around to service my Rivian and provide OTA updates 5+ years down the line. If me paying a few extra thousand dollars for a couple of non-critical options will help them with that, then why shouldn't I express my openness to doing so?

This isn't some Moroccan street vendor negotiation where all that matters is the price and your relationship with them ends upon completion of the transaction. As customers we need Rivian to survive and be in good financial health to get the best out of our vehicles in the long term. Not being able to see that perspective is frankly myopic.
