We received an email from Rivian today," Drive Modes and Home Charging Hints"

It advises, among other things:

3. Plan In Advance
There’s high demand for charger installation, and many electricians are booked in advance. Plan ahead to make sure you’re all set when your charger arrives; our partners at Qmerit can give you a free quote, assist with permitting and help choose where to mount your charger. If you’re in a condo or apartment complex, management may be open to helping with an install.

I'm just noting, for the record, that Rivian is the hold up on this item. I've asked Rivian to sell me a charger early or tell when I will receive it so I can actually plan ahead. I'm told that I can discuss with a guide, after I get one. For comparison, my quote was $1500, but included installing a new submeter next to my main electric meter, to get a lower EV rate for car charging. This did not include the charger itself, getting the Rivian charger. $675 for installation, $625 for materials, $200 permit fees. I need to get another quote or two, but don't really expect a better price. Sigh......

No offense to Rivian but someone has yet to make a case as to why I need their EVSE. At least for a while it's just a higher amp EVSE thats slightly cheaper than the market with pre-order pricing but does nothing unique. I'm sure in the future there will be some interoperability and convenience features added but there are several quality units on the market that will do the same thing as of today.

Keep in mind that other brand EVSE's with wi-fi can qualify for rebates from your electrical utility because they are very interested in learning EV owners charging habits.

I paid $550 for my Juicebox Pro40.. I got a nice fat check for $500 from my utility for it ;)
$50 for a high quality EVSE... how can you beat that?

Check with your utility before shelling out for the Rivian EVSE... you might be in for a very rewarding $urprise!

I got a Tesla one when I first got mine, I then installed a chargepoint for my parents, I like the Chargepoint more, I'd probably go that or comparable.

I'm glad about the March 1 pricing issue. Made me think twice on the Rivian charger, and the need for one in general.

I ended up dropping it when the configs reverted. I checked into my work and they have a charging program for $8 a month. Much cheaper to just charge there.

So yes, Plan In Advance, thanks Rivian!

this is not news. They are just sending out more pointless emails to make up for a "lack in communication".

It's kind of ironic for Rivian to tell their customers to plan in advance when most complaints about their rollout is from a failure to plan.

All the reason I need right there.
Guess that’s fair, I just assumed many had access to rebates. Between state/federal and utility rebates I’m pretty sure I’m making money off of my chargepoint EVSE install.

Good point. That sounds great. I literally just retired , otherwise possibly could have used a couple free chargers at our office, also at some of our plants. However, they often seemed busy and I would have needed to sort out how to make sure I could go out and move my car to avoid tieing them up when not using.

I can only get a $200 rebate on any charger from my utility. They also offer a plan that allows me to charge 10pm to 6am, for 4.2 cents/kwhr plus a $6/month base fee, if I add a submeter for EV charging only.

( I think/hope it will be easy to set the R1T to charge at nite only, and just keep it at 70% or so.)

You can set charging schedules by location i.e. charge only at night to 70% while at home M-F, 85% Sat. and Sun. and different profiles for away from home.

Yup, no incentives for EVs at all, in any capacity** around here. The Fed tax credit is the only option. Maybe something will change between now and the time my R1S shows up, but I'm definitely not holding my breath.

**New EV manufacturing plants are getting all kinds of incentives around here, but nothing for the peons.

yeah we have a whole program in place. You make reservations for specific stalls and have to move your vehicle after your time slot (only up to 4hrs at a time). My work has plenty of charging spots available, but some are a few blocks to a mile away from my building.

but charging for $72 a year sounds like a great deal compared to using my home electricity. I'd also have to buy the EVSE, and upgrade my 100A panel. No scenario in which that would be cost effective.
