Broken tonneau, cracked roofs, pooling water, keys not working....taking delivery now seems like a joke.

If you haven’t realized it yet, you will be an early adopter if you take delivery now. These things are expected and if you aren’t ready for that please postpone so a willing early adopter can gladly take the vehicle. We will all thank you!

I think you must have had better experiences with new vehicles than most others.
Either your definition of what counts as a defect is different than mine, or you have been exceptionally lucky with your new vehicle purchases.
Hmm... My takeaway is that I've either been lucky or other people are really unlucky.

I've bought 3 new vehicles within the last few years including one higher end make, one Chrysler, and one 2021 Ford Mach E delivered fairly early in production.

Not one of these vehicles has ever had to go to the shop for repairs.

The Chrysler ICE vehicles need maintenance performed like and worn out parts replaced like new tires, and the Mach E had some recall work done. But I've never had one of my new vehicles, all of which cost far less than a Rivian, have any features or components fail or require unexpected service.

On the other hand, it seems like a very high portion of Rivian owners here have various issues, although some minor, which require service appointments within the first couple months of ownership.

Wow, long thread. I will say I knowingly signed up for having issues, knew it would likely go into the shop, and didn't sell my old vehicle because I wanted a backup.

I wouldn't accept these things from an established auto maker, but for a first model brand new company you can't expect Toyota quality from day 1, if someone does then they are the idiots. I do expect Rivian to fix them.

The one thing that hasn't met my expectations, being all electric/Tesla for last 4 years, is the charging infrastructure. That's a truly broken experience. As my wife puts it "how do you make charging harder than pumping gas?"

I didn’t read through all 9 pages, but I will add some comments. I had a keyfob that did not work from day 1. I just had my mobile service visit and we found out that none of my keys (wrist band, key cards, keyfob) were actually linked to my truck. This was a simple screw up and now everything works perfectly on those.

I’ve washed my truck multiple times and no broken roof glass. I’m not climbing on the glass, putting all my bossy weight on. It, sitting on it, etc.

I have also used my tonneau cover a decent amount and it has been absolutely fine. Does it sound pretty, no…..does it work, yes.

I have had some issues, but Rivian has fixed them or we have a plan to fix them. This has far exceeded my experience with tesla considering these type of issues or issues in general. I got told by tesla I had to pay $2k+ to replace a seat on a 4 month old car because the stitching was tearing through on the passenger seat. That left a salty taste in my mouth.

I was expecting issues with the truck, but Rivian is actively working to fix them and I’m OK with that. I’ve had less issueswith my Rivian than we have had with my wife’s Volvo EV or teslas I’ve had in the past.

I had a similar bad experiences with Tesla (after the Model 3 ramp). Super frustrating to have to put a 12+ page document together to corporate to prove there was a missing perimeter battery seal (local SC wanted to keep turning it into a noise complaint). The way the SC treated me after bringing it in multiple times was humiliating. The last comments where "wow, you're here a lot" ... YES because the battery is missing a seal! I don't WANT to be here ... and after stating I needed to escalate the issue (after months and multiple visits) a Jr. Tech told a Sr. Tech "You knew he was going to do this". Ugh. I felt like complete sh*t.

They would literally not even look at where the seal should be and kept insisting they had to do a noise check (which you have to prepay for now ... every time) and they they "couldn't hear anything."

Rivian so far all the guide/SC/support team has treated me like a human. Any issues I did bring up only took 30 seconds to explain and when the tech checked they verified it within a few minutes, including wind noise complaints.

Good luck getting Tesla to look at any NVH complaints, "it's within spec".

That's absolutely not normal, I agree!
I am not that individual, but...the situation we have right now is very unique.

These vehicles have warranty... And pretty much best warranty available. And the pre-price increase pricing is a huge plus. And add to that still getting the $7500 tax deduction.

So, in my case, with deduction figured in, I paid about $73k, for a truck that if bought now, and delivered once the tax deduction is gone, would cost slightly over $100k.

That is a solid argument for considering taking delivery even if something doesn't work, that can be fixed....for free....

I'm continuing to read an over abundance of messages about Rivians being delivered with broken tonneau, cracked roofs, keys not working, and a laundry list of other issues. Why on gods green earth would you accept that trash product?

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but we look like dummies to outsiders. No person, buying any brand, should accept garbage broken products on day one.

How desperate do you need to be to accept delivery on a truck with a broken power tonneau on day 1? That's ludicrous. Even then, most of you know things are going to break and factor that in your purchase. Beta testing at its finest...cool if you want in on that. "I'm using my tonneau cover as little as possible"...that sounds idiotic.

I'm reviewing with my guide today and may postpone this thing for another 12 month. I have no probelem just keeping my current car. Rivian needs to get their shi* together.
Nope. I didn’t have any of those issues. But to be honest I expected there would/could be some issues. Just like my Teslas. Just like my first year Range Rover sport in its generation.

My truck has been perfect. No idea what this rant is all about. Sounds like a customer I wouldn’t want

I wish I had a dollar every time someone went on a forum and was surprised how many issues they saw for literally any car manufacturer. I would wager it's probably higher for a startup but still. No issues here.

Back in the day, I was foolish enough to own a Triumph TR-7. That sadly, has prepared me for virtually any poor vehicle ownership experience... for life!!!! I can not think of any major system on that POS that did not break.

Rivian vs. Triumph? Ummmmm Rivian by a parsec!

Thank you for the post - agreed, my thoughts as well. My X & 3 maybe went to the shop once or twice during ownership. Y, from delivery to a year later, not once. And the 30 other ICE vehicles I've owned went to the shop sparingly...

I still want my Rivian ( I think) but am devastated to hear all these issues. People are frying me for being a bit harsh, but this isn't normal for any vehicle. Every time I turn around it's another new issue, things I'd never even consider being issues... Washer sprayers, weak front glass, cracking sunroofs, seats misssing bolts, center council wobble, water in areas that shouldn't be, driveline creaking, sagging air suspesion, keys not working, locked out of truck, trucks won't turn on, missing nuts and bolts, missallighned doors, covers breaking after 5 uses, wobble, bad allignment, scratches, bad welds, quality issues, ripped seats, and on and on.

Come on guys, that's not even the whole list. We should chaulk that up to "a first year vehcile"? And "early addopter tax"? Not all of you, thank goodness, but many of you are making jokes about this? Folks are having their trucks in the shop for weeks on end, and waiting months for service in some cases.

What's going to happen when you try and resell your 2022 Rivian down the road? That's not a concern for anyone?

Fry me if you want, but anyone about to take delivery is reading all the same things I am. Tough decisions are ahead.
