Honestly, I think it's just this one. When I put it in my laptop to confirm that it worked, my laptop asked for permission to access the new "device," which it has never done for any other card readers.
Maybe some sort of encryption or protection

Turns out that Micro SD Card Reader didn't work at all. When I plugged it into the truck, it didn't recognize it at all, and when I plugged it into my laptop, it asked for permission to read it, so clearly it is being recognized as some kind of device other than just a basic drive.
That's how USB works. The device itself is responsible for advertising what it is, and it can say it is anything it wants, whenever it wants. This is how a USB Rubber Ducky works. The device can advertise itself to the target PC as an HID (human interface device like a keyboard or mouse) and then inject commands as the current user, or flash memory and offload data. Those are the dangers of buying and using cheap USB devices off the internet...

Many SD cards have write protect capabilities, but that wouldn't prevent the reader (or even the card) from being detected.

I decided to try another SD Card reader and this one worked perfectly: C356 Type-C MicroSD Card Reader

Now I'm set up exactly how I had intended. Minimal bulk, versatility, and upgradability.

14 pages, can't read through them all... Has anyone noticed their USB being real warm? Not transferring data, just left it plugged in... And boy she's warm.

USB what? Stick? SDD? MicroSD? I put heat sinks on my MicroSD for good measure.

I have several Sandisk extreme portable SSDs I use for photography backup. They are a little large capacity wise for this until I find out how Rivian manages wear leveling with the new update. I will use the Samsung flashdrive I use to download Gear Guard videos now. Looking forward to see what works well for everyone.

My Anker SD reader is cold as can be after an hour on the road but no transfers. Granted it's 50* out and I don't have the heat on because... well you know... range and HVAC logic.
