Evaluate how much you have used, on your first trip, and how much you gained while charging at 120V. You can then take the out-of-the-way route, if necessary, to charge on the way home. There is a good chance that there will be more options for charging later in the year (2024). You might check to see what Tesla options there might be along your route - you might have access to (some) Tesla chargers by the time you take delivery.

would such an adapter work. And if so. Where do I get one? My wall charger won’t be installed for a month or so

Yes, we had to do the same before we got our Wall Charger installed. This is the adapter we got (your plug might be different):

Just make sure not to use the dryer when you're charging (and limit the draw to 24 amps).

For total peace of mind as cold weather performance when running heat is always an unknown. I have installed 50 amp outlets at both of my kids homes. Really nice to visit and if there is any concern due to weather I just pull my vehicle I. Good luck. Also nice have the ability to help out a fellow traveler or neighbor that might need to charge an EV

Yes, you can control that in the Rivian App or on the charging screen in the car. If you want to limit your charging to 24amps all the time until you get your EVSE installed, you'll need to set a charging schedule (Daily, from 12am-12am, at 24 amps). Otherwise, the car will reset to 32 amps next time you plug in. This might be confusing now, but it's very intuitive once you actually have the car.

Look into a nema 6-20 install. Depending on if you ha e a dedicated circuit/plug, you can convert a 120v to 240 using existing wiring.

Of course it's still limited to a 16amp at 240v, but better than nothing.

I'm not saying this specifically, but are there by chance two different circuits ran to the garage? I remember conversation a while ago about some kind of "box" that would allow you to combine multiple circuits into one. Can't find the discussion off-hand. Anybody have experience with this?

That sounds like a perfect father/son-in-law bonding moment! Just be honest, cover the parts costs (including EVSE), and ask to help and learn. "Right wing" isn't the enemy, they're literally your family now. And let him claim the tax write-off, credit Trump.

Also every time you visit and charge from now on, bring a $30-50 gift or buy dinner/drinks, if you don't already.

My brother installed a 220 50 amp outlet in his garage for me (and for his future use). I pay him the going rate every time I charge - I don't ask, I just calculate the amount based on the cost per kwh and send it to his checking account electronically. No big deal. I could have paid for the outlet install with the savings vs public chargers.

Having done this, and crawled on/over the dryer at least 10 times now, I can confidently say, f*ck that noise. No matter how young and flexible you feel, it ain't fun, and your in-laws will always look at you funny.

...but given her right wing family, the last thing I want to do is drive it 20 miles out of the way just to charge up, or worse, have it die on the way home.

There is a route that does take us past chargers, but it adds about 30 minutes to the trip, plus charging time. This is essentially the deal worst case scenario for our R1 use, so I want to make sure it can handle it before taking delivery.

You would only need to charge one way at the route that adds 30 minutes. You can do it on the way back so it won't impact the visit time arrival.

Right-wing has nothing to do with it. You probably just don't want to hear "I told you so" about EV and range in general - get over it. Majority of Americans feel EVs are impractical still.

More than inconveniencing your in-laws, you would be sucking up their electricity. Maybe they'll be pissed about that more... "too bad you can't goto a gas station..."

So if the range in winter is less than 240 mile round trip (which probably is that since R1s do not have a heat pump for the batteries) you will cancel delivery?? If that's the case, I think it's a non-starter, if you're not willing to work within the constraints of EVs and R1S.

Make sure that when you talk about it you arent doing it from a place of percieved superiority. I live in a really sold red area, we still have a Trump store. Yes those are a thing unbelievably.

Almost every conversation I have about my truck is positive but I always emphasize things they can relate to when I talk about. About how fast it is or about how cool I find it. So long as I'm not coming from a place of "I'm part of the solution for climate change and this truck is doing my part" you'll be good.

People don't like being insulted and the implications of you being part of the solution is that everyone who doesn't have an EV is the problem.

I'm happy to talk about the truck when people are genuinely interested in it. These days I seem to get at least 25% telling me that they will never switch to and EV, blah blah blah. Hard to want to keep talking to them. Not sure when it seems like the attitude has changed so much in the last year.
