What time of year did they start selling model year 2023 and 2024?
I'm wondering when they might start selling these 2025 models. Maybe 4Q 2024? Right after the discount coupons expire?
Somewhere on the forum I read somebody believing that the units coming out after the shutdown were going to be 2025 model year.

Interestingly the 2025 model year table still shows the quad motor variant. I have to believe they are moving to Enduro’s.

Their primary goals are cost cutting in the shutdown. I have no in-site into the cost but we can look at Tesla’s evolution around cost cutting to get some ideas and also to the R2 that was displayed.

1). Battery - this has to be the most expensive component in these cars
2). External vendor produced parts. Motors - I suspect even the quads will be moving to Enduro (or replaced by the Tri, but something tells me they need differentiation between the R2 and R1 and a quad would be it)
3). Wiring and wiring sub systems
4). Reduce manufacturing complexity in all the sub components
5). Make everything digitally controlled
6). Volume pricing for anything not made in house (this means sharing components with R2/R3)
7). Fewer parts
8). Reduce choice - this seems the opposite of where Rivian is headed though?

Now that the vouchers are percentage based, shouldn’t Rivian want voucher holders to buy more expensive vehicles too? Presumably their margins are higher at the more expensive end. They would likely lose less (and may even make a profit) off of voucher buyers.

Makes sense they want fewer discounts in Q4 when they may be able to show they can break even, but in reality, if they can sell out the pre-refresh R1s, what’s the benefit to Rivian of putting voucher holders into the R1s that cost them more to make instead of the refreshed R1s? (In Q2 and Q3.)

And if they want to put voucher holders into pre-refresh vehicles, why wouldn’t they just say so?

Interesting point here. Traditionally VIN switchover for legacy auto occurs September ish. Rivian does this later IIRC. Maybe October/November?

Looks like they are aiming to get all pre price hike reservation off the books at the close of Q3.

Me too! I hope they don't kill off the QM. From my perspective I love the torque vectoring without brake involvement.

Or maybe in the TM they will use wet clutches to vector torque with ability to 100% lock or 100% open to really make a superior off road system as well as on road.
Agreed. The quad motor is something that truly sets Rivian apart in the 4x4 world. Having individual vectoring, as you mentioned, is something I would love to see more of...being able to eliminate the need for lockers, etc., is a big deal. I hope they don't throw that away.

I think Rivian mostly cares about getting the vouchers/discounts done by the end of Q3 so they can work towards positive gross margins in Q4. The relatively small number of remaining pre-price hike order holders probably isn't enough for them to really focus on trying to steer customers one way or another.

Also don't forget that the vouchers are percentage based. So a ~20% discount on a $65k vehicle is a different dollar figure than a 20% discount on a $100k vehicle.

Lets hope the premium version includes:

Bumper Winch integration
OEM sliders
Beefier suspension with more payload
OEM lift, and/or larger range of adjustment???

This is clearly the case. And it makes sense they want to be profitable in 2024 Q4.

Doesn't make sense to me. I mean, they seem to be okay with selling large packs as standard packs.

I think the assumption in all this is that the VIN decoder only applies to 2025 model year vehicles. Are they required to update for 2024 if they start selling these trims early?

They might just say that model year 2025 starts in May for just this year. Other manufacturers do similar.

tri-motor enduro replaces quad motor with equivalent or higher HP.
If that ends up being accurate, it would be cool to see a tri-motor R1 with some sort of eLSD or locker in the rear, which would most likely be an improvement over what we've seen with the quad-motor so far.

I am not sure what the entry level model has since the price difference has to be reasonable ($3k plus) between it and Adventure. Which means more than $3k (in that example) needs to be cut and it won’t be the roof, screens. Hard to cut that much from the interior for your flagship (ie not cloth seats for example).

Really good find, thank you posting. This well could be the death knell of the quad motor Rivian.

I’m missing something. Doesn’t this indicate the continuation of the Quad? Or do people view its inclusion as a fake out since a Tri is added?

It does seem like too many choices. Of course I have a hard time picking a color.

I wonder if they're bringing back the "explorer" package. That's what I had originally ordered but they discontinued that model. That one didn't have vented seats, no yellow accents throughout the vehicle and some other things, but was more affordable.
My guess is the adventure package will be renamed as "premium" and the explorer will be the lower, more affordable trim.

I called it when they showed the R2 and posted a thread on it…

Here is the lineup you will have:

DM
DMP (discontinued) -> Tri motor
QM Bosch (discontinued) -> QM enduro

Expect price and performance increase on both the TRI and QM
i can see the Tri motor starting where the current QM is at and the new QM starting over $90k

Sorry to disappoint, but quad motor does NOT obviate the need for lockers and is easily proven off-road with the current quad setup. The obstacle in my profile pic saw two wheels flying and the truck refusing to move...even a single locker would've helped in that situation. A good tri-motor setup with a locker on the single-motor axle would likely go a long way in improving that situation, but we'll be able to tell once Tesla enables the lockers on the CyberTruck as a point of comparison. Quad motor shows its worth *on-road* only, not off-road. On-road they do some pretty amazing things with torque vectoring, but the same way it doesn't work well off-road in tricky situations it also presents a hazard on-road in off-camber situations on ice.
