Hey all, exactly HOW do I use a Tesla Supercharger with my new adapter? Do I need to establish a Tesla account to pay for the charging? Is there a way to pay for each session via my Rivian account? How does this work from A to Z?

No need for Tesla account - goes right to your RAN pay set up. Very easy

I thought it linked to the Rivian app (plug & play) but I don't have an adapter so havnt yet figured it out either.

Plug and Charge should work as long as you have a valid payment method in your Rivian account.

If you ever want to take advantage of a Tesla membership and the charging discount, you have to initiate a charging session through the Tesla app before connecting the station to your R1.

Agree with this, as long as you have your Rivian account setup with a credit card plug and pay works.

I found that it does require an internet connection as well. When we had the internet issue with the vehicles a couple of months ago I had to start the session with my Tesla app. Oddly it still charged through Rivian but could not start by plugging in.

Option 1: plug and charge, need to have credit card on file with your Rivian account.

Option 2: if you have a Tesla membership, initiate charge with Tesla app before plugging in, ~20% off what Tesla would bill non-Teslas. If you have membership and don't initiate charge before plugging in, you will default to plug and charge and pay full non-Tesla rate.

Only at select Supercharger sites that Tesla has made available to Rivian.

I would add your credit card to your Rivian app before you go to charge. I did it on a Road trip and I couldn’t get it to work but on my return home it was fine.
I find that my a2z adapter works best by plugging it into the Rivian then plugging the Tesla cord into plugged in adapter.

  1. Download the Tesla app (version 4.30.5 or higher) for iOS or Android and create a Tesla Account.
  2. Select ‘Charge Your EV’ and find your Supercharger site.
  3. Tap the ‘Add Your Vehicle Details’ banner and add your details.
  4. Add your payment method and follow the prompts.

Install the app and poke around. It’s well designed and well written. You’ll figure it out in minutes if you read and follow what is presented on screen. No payment is necessary until you try to charge or subscribe to membership. So it costs nothing and requires no personal information to explore the app.

The other advantage of using the Tesla app is that it will tell you (when you can't find the charging station where you're parked) that you're at one of the Tesla-only SC sites.

On a trip we pulled into a Wawa in NJ to get some snacks and use the bathroom and were pleasantly surprised to see a large bank of open Tesla SC's. We had planned on charging later but figured 15 minutes here would save us some time later, so we tried to connect only to find that this particular SC wasn't open to non-Teslas.

Yes and no. Your Rivian's nav and Rivian mobile app can do that also. And if you have it set to filter out incompatible sites, it will only show you ones you can use as a Rivian owner.

It's way more difficult to sort that out in the Tesla app. Just use the Rivian app or your vehicle nav. Set your filters correctly, and if you don't see the charger on the nav, then you can't use it.

Absolutely - and that's normally how we roll (with liberal use of PlugShare thrown in for good measure). In this case it was a "charger of opportunity" that we wanted to use rather than a planned charging stop. It only took about 30 seconds for the app to make it clear that we weren't welcome there, so I moved the car out of the charging spot and we were no worse for the effort.
