My wife was driving out of a parking lot and while turning into the street the rear passenger opened. Afterwards she got out and noticed that the door wouldn’t close. The latch seemed closed and wouldn’t grab.

Has anyone experienced this? What could have caused this situation?

As a kid I remember pushing the latch in on the door with my finger. Then it would not close of course.
My dad thought he had to close it harder because I didn’t tell him I messed with the door latch….
BANG!
I still remember that sound of him trying to close the door. I also remember the ass beating I got that day.
Anyway. Not sure if that is the same problem, but I thought I would share.
He had to pull the latch back out for it to work again. Now I knew how to fix it!

I’ve had the issue where the door wouldn’t latch closed (but it was obvious that it wasn’t closed so I didn’t drive away - meaning it’s not that it unlatched it’s that it never latched).

I believe the issue is that the door was open, someone pressed the button to open it, so the latch mechanism wouldn’t engage. The solution was to press the door open button again, then the door would latch closed.

My vehicle was delivered with a broken door latch mechanism. Rivian struggles with some things.

Do you have a Gen1 or Gen2? There is a significant difference in the latch mechanisms so when you ask if anyone experienced this without specifying the generation you run the risk of not getting the information you want. Hopefully Rivian will get this fixed for you quickly!

Can the vehicle be put into drive without the doors being closed? Also I thought the doors auto locked upon putting the vehicle into drive. So how could the door open when in motion?

I have a Gen1 as well and I’ve never put the vehicle into drive without the doors being closed, but I know if it is in drive and a door opens it immediately shows a graphic on the driver’s display and plays the warning tones. For a Gen1 I think only a mechanical problem with the latching mechanism would cause the door to open while in motion.

Since it’s a rear door, have you checked the child lock physical control for that door? IIRC, the control is behind a rubber plug near the cutout for the latch in the metal, but I’d check the owner’s manual to be sure. I’d probably try it in both positions to make sure it’s working properly and leave it set to what you want. It should be designed in such a way that not being fully one way or the other won’t cause a problem, but if it isn’t then making sure it’s fully in one position may help.

Can anyone verify if the r1s can be put in drive if a rear door is open? Sorry I don’t have my r1s in my possession at the moment to test it myself. TIA!
