Just had 12v battery failure that appears to be bad battery? They replaced under warranty thankfully. We've had the R1S for only 10 months (9,200mi). R1S gets driven 6-7 days/week, we charge in garage - typically run it between 50-70% as we tend to plug it in ~ every other day.

I got little warning - unplugged from Rivian charger (@70%), pulled out from garage and got a variety of warning messages including 12v problem.

Very, very appreciative that the San Jose service center was willing to send out mobile service to take care of this. Mobile technician opined that 6-9 months is what he's seen in a number of these for the 12v (!).

In my case, we were unable to "jump" it via cables at the back: tried jump box and also 12v trickle charger. Technician had to manually release frunk by removing panels underneath/manual release. Replaced 12v (just one in this vehicle) and everything back to normal.

Mine just died today. R1S with 4000miles. No warning at all. Have a mobile tech scheduled for monday. glad we were not using it for a trip this weekend like we normally do!! I'm trying the trickle charge but it seems dead dead like 0v. Why is this still an issue!!

I was just checking my 12v battery on my Tesla today after reading about failures occurring with no warning, same problem. With the Tesla you can check the health via the service menu. Where can you check it with the Rivian?

If you have the Home Assistant integration, you can see the health but it won't give a voltage.

The 12v batteries are a weak spot on these trucks. With that said, you can view the state of health for the 12v in the RIDE menu. I wouldn't spend all the money to proactively replace it. I would instead purchase a good battery bank. If/when it fails you can jump the truck back to life and then replace them. The aftermarket lithium LifePo4 batteries are pretty good. One vendor claims to have heating. As long as they have a bms and provisions to warm them up when it's really cold (LFP can be damaged by charging below freezing though they can still be discharged).

Your not overthinking it as it's a valid concern. Just better to be prepared if there is a failure because even if you spend the money to replace, there's no guarantee that you won't have a failure.
Can you please explain how to use RIDE menu to monitor 12v health?

it doesn't show soh but it shows voltage. I think Rivian should add the voltage of the 12v battery or batteries (depending on production date) to the gauges view. I show that here in my RIDE menu video:

With Tesla, the app will notify you that the 12v battery needs to be replaced soon. The vehicle will not perform firmware update until the battery is replaced. The warning comes well before the vehicle being inoperative.

The battery Tesla uses is a Samsung 12V and can easily be replace by the owner. The battery cost is about $100, and YouTube has videos of "how-to" DIYs. I've seen Li-Ion battery for about $400.

My Tesla battery warning came at 4.5 yrs and was covered by the warrantee. They sent out the mobile tech within couple of days.

We got the 12volt Warning on July 19th. I called the Service Center. They set up a mobile service appointment for August 15th. They told me to stay plugged in at all times while home to preserve 12 volt battery operation. We followed these instructions and was able to continue using the vehicle carefully watching the state of charge and range. A few days after the initial call to Rivian, they called us back and moved our mobile service appointment up to August 2nd.

Opal (our R1T) continued to operate as normal and was used daily during that period without any issues. The red battery icon on her driver's dash remained on during the entire period. During that time we did not observe any unusual depletion of her charge status.

On August 2nd, mobile service came and replaced Opal's 12 volt battery. Opal was produced in March of 2023 with a single 12 volt battery. She currently has almost 8,000 miles on her. The technician told us that this was about average for 12 volt battery longevity.
