Clunking sound from front end.

Did the washers go on the ends of the half-shaft? Do you have the repair notes from this?

Here is the work order for the washers; it doesn't look like it says specifically where they go on the halfshafts.

My first R1T was a LE QM and at around 3,000 miles started having the same problems. Apparently the vehicle could not withstand the torturous driving on paved roads back and forth to the store. Over the next 8,000 miles went through the bandaid repairs (lube and tighten bolts, new washers, etc.), then sub frame replacement and a new front drive unit. Still had the same problems. I requested a replacement vehicle and was ghosted by Rivian for several months. After much complaining (a truly bitter experience) Rivian agreed to replace the vehicle. At my request the replacement vehicle was an R1T DM. While the new R1T only has 4,000 miles what a difference. So far absolutely solid. While not an automotive engineer I think Rivian took on more than it could chew in trying to build a QM vehicle which would be all things to all people - rock climbing at one end of the scale and sport mode at the other end. To much articulation. By the way I am a stockholder in Rivian and certainly back the company. I just think there have been some questionable decisions along the way.

Yep, pretty sure that will be endgame for me as well. Trade in for a dual. I already had a buy back for paint issues in the early days.

They get slammed onto the hub with a tool that crimps them onto the hub splines and then the shaft is reattached. I’ve watched it being done by the mobile tech at my house.

Thanks for the feedback. How come the dual motor versions don't have this issue? I'm at 6K on odometer, it only started around 5K.

After hearing your story, I now have especially low hope of a resolution once the dampers work is done, but my hope wasn't high to begin with because they clearly don't know what to do - it's as if they're poking in dark trying things that might help; while perhaps genuinely trying, they still message after each time that it's all fixed and ready for pickup, then when I show up and it clearly isn't, they say they guess they can try X next.

Sad situation for sure, and finally this half shaft may be what breaks the camel's back (aka my threshold), I think everything else I could handle: all the other rattles/noises, vampire drain, shaking steering wheel above 60mph, sounds of humming from poorly aligned wheels that could never be resolved, subpar audio system, too many issues/missing features in software deck, poor quality cameras, uncertainty in support for Gen1 moving forward, to name a few, all of which I was ready to live with, but this driving experience due to poor half shaft designs, if that's what it is, is simply straight up stinky.

I don't know if I have the energy to go through what sounds like a really difficult time getting rivian to replace it (it'd be interesting to hear more about how contact was made, what triggered responses, etc), but due to that potential energy drain a part of me leans to save the stress, cut losses and just sell to carvana who seem to offer a price that is roughly around what I paid after various tax rebates.. meanwhile look around for another 7 seater (EV hopefully).

I also hope rivian makes it, not just for my stake in their company, however they have many improvements/fixes to make in order to create a loyal customer base who will advertise positively for rivian.

The big differences I noticed between my previous QM and my present DM are that the Rock Climbing and Sport modes were eliminated and the DM has what are in essence differentials front and rear to connect the two motors to the wheels. Major redesigns. A much simpler vehicle which drove my decision making.

Yep, and I often times think that maybe the motors on the quad aren't perfectly synced at times and could cause a clunk?

So this didn't fix the clunk for you?

I don't think there will be a fix that resolves the clunk and chatter. With that in mind, I had a meeting with my OCD and discussed the situation. We decided that the + significantly outweighed the - with this vehicle and will shove that noise down deep and ignore whatever can't be solved. I live 150 miles from the SC; this will be my first appointment after six months. I enjoy the experience and so many other aspects of the truck that I will be letting this highly irritating part go and never speak of it again?

I'm in the same boat. I don't expect a fix anytime soon. This will require some sort of support bracket that can stabilize the arm. Hard to explain, but I have an idea in mind.

With that said, I'm not voiding my warranty and I'm also not going to hound Rivian knowing that it's currently unfixable.

I think some owners have slightly less play in their half-shaft and sometimes another fix ends up coincidently reducing the play. It's a highly complex suspension that most likely requires the play.

I have 32 months left of my lease. If Rivian comes up with a fix, I may purchase this outright. If they don't, I'll most likely opt for a new Rivian or move-on to another brand. I do have an R2 reservation for my girlfriend and I don't expect this to be an issue with that model, but it also won't have the same off-road capability.

This issue is wasting a lot of resources for Rivian with SC visits. They may be working on a fix and will issue a customer service campaign just to reduce the headache.

Side note: It gets a bit more quiet with colder temps. Mother nature is going to cut back on the noise for the next 7 months where I live. This morning at 34F it was almost gone.
