That data port looking plug is fluid? Point me at a junker Gen2 and I'll order the camera. There are plenty of Gen1 to strip parts from, newer are harder to find.
Yeah, it’s fluid. Have seen it first hand.

They very well might not be. I don’t have pictures.

I love the internet, everyone is free to be a complete ass towards everyone else. Yes I know what LiDAR is (Light Detection and Ranging), and I also know many modern ADAS are using integrated LiDAR+RGB cameras. This was complete speculation, but not a comment of stupidity. Good luck with your superiority complex bud.
Please point me to any vehicle ADAS that uses integrated RGB and LiDaR cameras...

Go ahead, I'll wait...

Changing any camera, or any part that has a camera, also requires a very time consuming ADAS calibration that involves signs and mats of specific sizes at specific distances. I won't be posting those pictures.
And therein lies the key problem. If the pixels/resolution is increased, the size of everything in the image (signs, lines on the road, lane width, vehicle size, etc) will be smaller relative to the trained model and calibration targets, presenting challenges to even achieving proper calibration based on size and distance.

But what do I know, nothing I guess, having spent weeks at a time doing vision systems training and calibration in industrial processes where changing the focal length on a lens changes everything. ?‍♂

Multiple Chinese EVs (XPeng P5/G9, Nio ET7, Avatr 07) and in the States the latest Waymo Robotaxi (6th gen Zeekr) are all using today.

I get you guys point however, the cameras and software are just too integrated to make upgrading these feasible. Thx for the insight -

Ohh there is. But finding a camera that fits in the hole the current ones live In is the easy part.

Because then you'll have to figure out how to hack into the car's operating to system to gain root access and replace the OS with a custom one that you wrote that won't crash when it receives the wrong number of pixels from that new camera.

And while you are at it you might as well whip up some carplay software too.

I certainly agree you won’t get the gen2 software but the clarity could be better. Why would a computer that powerful struggle with 4K data?

I’m super content with my Gen 1 with poor eyesight. I like driving it and don’t really care to just sit in it and be driven around. Where is the fun in that.

However I am wishing it had a cruise resume button. Or maybe I just don’t know how to operate it.

Because computers, no how powerful, are 100% unthinking. They do exactly as told. If the computer was not told to expect a 4k image and exactly what to do if it gets one then sending it that will cause it to crash.

If the programmer believed that every car would have a particular camera they would not normally write instructions for how to deal with an unexpected alternative.

It is totally possible to create software that could handle a scenario where every video frame that comes in might be a different size/format. But that would be much more complex and much slower.

It is possible that it would work, but I would not expect it to. On the other hand, the software does seem pretty laggy. Perhaps they did go the inefficient route.

Yeah, none of those are 'integrated' wit the cameras as you suggested. They are all separate LiDaR sensors, and most of them are still pretty large units, significantly larger than a Gen 2 camera unit.

The last time I saw this thread come up, somebody (who seemed well informed) said it wasn't replacing the camera hardware that was the issue, it was the computer not being powerful enough in the Gen 1s to process the data throughput. I don't have a source, nor do I know the validity of that person's claims, but that does seem like the most plausible reason they can't upgrade the cameras IMO.

The longer I think about this, the more I am good with my current investment in my R1S. The cameras I have work better than my previous ICE Grand Cherokee, which didn't have any self-driving features and only a backup camera. In any event, it is damn likely that this car will age out before they make FSD a thing at Rivian.

It is so easy for me to spiral down the "I need to upgrade my [fill-in-the-blank] because I read a post about the latest and greatest [fill-in-the-blank]. Then I catch myself before I buy a high-speed home network enclosure with 12 TB drives to replace my 9 TB NAS. I feel so much better now.
