A couple months ago I had the subframe replace on my 2022 Quad R1T. A few weeks later I started having a rattling sound in the drivers side wheel well especially at low speeds when coming to a stop. Then last week I started having a weird creak/moan at low speeds especially when turning. I took the truck in last Friday. They called me back Wednesday and said it was done. They just had to replace some half shafts apparently. I asked if someone test drive the truck to make sure the sounds were gone and they confirmed they did. I showed up and asked to take a drive with a tech and nothing had changed, so I left the truck there.

They called yesterday and said that it was the front drive unit. Has anyone had theirs replaced and if so, for what reason. I feel like a warning would go off if it truly was failing but i dont know for sure.

I have not had the drive unit(s) replaced, but definitely had all sorts of those issues with my old Gen1 Quad. They replaced dampers, jounce, and halfshafts. Nothing stopped the ever-worsening rattle and clatter from the front. I'm interested in how this works out for you.

My new Gen2 Tri is starting to rattle just like my Gen1 did. I only have 1300 miles on it! Ugh.

Sound for me is much worse in warmer weather.

I’ll let you know. I’m not optimistic. My truck has always had a lot of clunks and rattles, but this seems different. What’s odd is the variance. Some people report whisper quiet trucks. I’d really love to take a ride in one of these.

oh no please don’t tell me that. I’m just getting out of my gen 1 quad due to a bunch of issues. I’m taking delivery of a gen 2 tri next week. I was told the gen 2 is a solid truck and should be trouble free.

First 800 miles in my Tri were bliss! Now its a jekyll & hyde thing.

The couple of quiet R1Ts that I've been in had 20" AT wheel set up. My quad had 21s, my tri has 22s. Is there something to that?

My quad had the 20” AT setup. Interior rattled like crazy. Especially when the temps were above 70s. But I think that was mostly due to how many times they taken apart my vehicle trying to fix various systems. My new truck motor comes with 20” AT wheels. So I guess I will let you know. What interior color did you pick?

Nice! So you had issues with your quad, but not related to this rattling and clunking front suspension?

I went with the black interior with the dark wood trim. This ascend interior is beautiful! What did you go with?

Oh my gen 1 definitely had issues with rattling and clunking front suspension.
I also had high and low voltage battery swap. Several air suspension leaks. Hydraulic fluid leak, hvac leak, front suspension swap. Half shafts etc. Those were just the major things. But I feel like every time they did a major repair it would develop a new rattle or creaking sound.
My gen 2 tri motor is coming with the dark interior with the dark brown wood trim.

Seems that Gen 2 is actually worse in terms of quirks and glitches. they’re still ironing out the kinks, late Gen 1 2023/24 your best bet for reliability.

Sounds like a bearing failure. I am with all of you in that I like a quiet truck. The challenge with Rivian…IMO…is the variance in ride height. The truck is built for off road adventure and the design creates …I believe….more opportunity for noises.

The tri motor unit that I drove was pretty quiet except for in low ride height but I didn’t hear clunking it was mostly just normal noises from traveling across crappy road surfaces.

I suspect a truck with no air suspension or ride height adjustment might have the more silent ride but then you give up a lot of the capability of the truck.

my Silverado EV is much smoother and quieter but that only has 2” of adjustment in each direction. The low rider mode lowers it 3”. The Rivian has a much wider range of adjustment.

I had the front drive unit replaced after I got a motor fault error a couple times. So far, that's taken care of the problem. I hadn't noticed a rattle before or after the replacement. Good luck!

Oh. That’s good to hear. Thank you. In what situations did you have the whine?
Not the person you replied to, but I was in the same situation. Mine had a high pitched whine at about 25-35 mph. They replaced the whole front drive unit.
