And the GM vehicles are larger overall and I believe much heavier. Too lazy to verify.
Based strictly on payload, my R1T has a much higher towing capacity vs available payload, since it's rated for 11k towing and my T only has 1387 lbs payload. A 180 kWh pack would push it way down from already being kinda low. Rivian couldn't reasonably have left the tow capacity at 11k, since 10% is the generally accepted minimum tongue weight.

I still don’t see a problem, I only see solutions. That’s why we pay the big bucks.

The Rivian Standard pack weighs 1603lb
The Rivian Max Pack weighs 1735lb

They are about 40kwh apart in capacity. I'm going to hazard that the 40kwh weight difference between Max pack and a 180kwh pack isn't going to destroy the tow capacity.

Can anyone explain why having a 180kW battery is a good thing? Why can't they develop a more efficient battery? Having a 150kW battery should be able to go 500 miles. Lucid has a smaller battery than ours and can go further. That's what we really need.

It's not about an efficient battery, it's about aerodynamics. Just like ICE trucks get worse MPG than a sedan.

When towing a large trailer about the only thing that matters is KW.
I don't need a more efficient battery, I just need more KWH. Aerodynamics help, but at this point the cargo trailers are not aerodynamically efficient.

Instead of losing the third row, I would have voted to put the extra batteries in the compact-spare tire cavity. I would use the extra 50kw way more often than a spare.
That is the rear crumple zone. All vehicles need to pass a flammability rear crash test. Putting the battery there will cause a fire in a rear end crash. I believe some ice cars had this problem long time back.

Make an R1S XL & R1T with the additional 2 modules to capture some more customers.
would be great but they currently can barely cool today’s maxpack so not sure how they would with an extra 40kwh or so.

Yeah...they really need to redesign the cooling package for the battery. If they make a battery close to the 180 kWh we were supposed to get with better thermals, I'll upgrade...quickly.

They are doing an entire new cooling system for R2... I'm sure that the lessons learnt there will translate to future improvements in the R1 platform

everyone whining about 131 and 140+ kwh packs should try a Gen 2 “Large” pack - higher prices and only 109kwh. Rivian’s future packs are only going to get smaller and smaller.
