Definitely interested in a comma for my Gen 1 as a Xmas present.

From the website it looks like the install is a little different? installation directions

Does anyone know much about the harness situation? For the 3X it was recommended to use Lucas' harness with the fuse tap and if you wanted the longitudinal control you needed another harness ontop of that. Are these still recommended?

Thanks
You can use either the Xnor (Lukas) or the Comma main harness for lateral control - you will have to add the Xnor longitudinal harness as well for long. If you use the comma harness, it is recommended to modify the harness for axm power to bypass and then add a fuse tap for power. Lukas already makes this adjustment on his harness and includes the tap. He also discounts when you buy both together from him and the overall isn't that much more and you don't have to make changes.

The Rivian-specific installation instructions still apply (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1clodGRssTx-dSPSUrQITq_vqumgWcpSUw83zdcAZR-A/edit?tab=t.0), including the recommendation to remove the AXM power connection on the harness if you want to use the fusetap or other alternative power source.

If you want to use Openpilot Longitudinal instead of the stock ACC on the Rivian, you'll still need to get the upgrade kit as well, but that's an upgrade you can do at anytime. It's also a LOT easier to install than the main harness.

If you aren't a highway driver, you might think the comma isn't really helpful - but I tell you, I engage mine as I leave my driveway and don't disengage until I get where I'm going. It works for any road/surface and being conversational, I can steer over what it's doing if I want without it disengaging. It just provides a little freedom and added safety at the same time.
Major highways are where I think the gen 1 system is fine. No need for the Comma. But far more of my driving is in town and on minor highways where the built in system is useless.

Has the mount changed?

Thanks everyone. I'll be getting Lucas' harnesses then. Two other questions for the experts.

1.) I had heard some rumblings that there were some Rivians that had some persistent errors after installing the comma. I had heard that there were some theories on why. Any progress on these?

2.) As @SwampNut aluded to, what is everyone's thoughts on the mount situation? given the new "heat tolerant" design, etc.... would a magnetic mount still be worth it? I suppose to prevent smash and grabs?

Looking at the videos and the photos, it looks like the same attachment and they aren't selling a different one on the site like I would expect them to if it was. But @gerrylum mentions below that they are in fact different

Yeah, I worded that a little off - I had written that if you only drive D+ highways, it probably wouldn't pencil - then I deleted that and changed the wording a little but didn't really get the point across.

Major highways as long as there's no glare on the camera, the lane markings are clear, the roads aren't too wet, it's premapped, etc. etc. When it works, the Gen 1 system is ok. The problem is that whole "when it works" part. Plus it's not hands-free. I know that's not a big deal to some, but it's a huge benefit of Openpilot in my eyes. 😅

The mount is very similar, but is in fact a different mount so it won't work with the old one (3/3X).

Hah, true! Some CA major highways with faded gray lines on gray pavement are scary.

Hands off is nice indeed. I’m kinda ok with resting two fingers on the sensors, but prefer never being nagged too.

Well, guess I’ll remove my Janka base tonight and get ready.

OH, I didn't catch that. Good to know.

Im one of the early users who had a lot of problems. Some were clearly caused by the Comma, and I removed it. Then found that another issue was actually a Rivian bug that they fixed around mid summer.

As to the mount I’m going to just use the stock one. If anyone is interested in a Janka base and cable I’ll let it go cheap. I don’t have the Comma side plate. Long story.

The issue doesn't happen persistently enough and affects so few people that it makes diagnosing extremely difficult. It can be as simple as a bad USB cable, or it could have nothing to do with the Comma at all.

I need to get off my butt and test out a delay fuse tap. The ACC errors, I don't believe are comma related at all. The motor faults, surely seem to be related to boot timing. I have the random issue and it seems to evolve. What started as a Red motor fault error, then on to no error whatsoever just couldn't put into gear, has now switched to full on turtle/motor and 12v fault. A full reset clears it every time and only appears at boot - never while driving. Interestingly enough the last progression came about the same time I installed the EV Play.

All this said, it's not so cumbersome that it outweighs the benefit by any means. Just costs me a couple of minutes when it happens.

Weird random and rare errors suck. I had a weird AC problem that directly correlated with the Comma install, but was caused by a new software bug Rivian introduced. It took months to document it, then Rivian acknowledged and fixed it. So much wasted time and annoyance. And time without the Comma driving for me.
