Also is this the definition of irony? The generator ran out of gas overnight. But the ignition was still on. Later the next day its battery was dead and couldn't be started. So there I am, with a massive 400v battery pack, being charged by a gas generator, whose battery was dead, and I had to jump start it with yet another battery....

So do we compare the MPG to another 2/3 ton truck with 835 HP…?

Also, fucking Microsoft (Copilot). Completely retarded answer (all the others are in a reasonable range).

Short answer: About 40–55 MPG equivalent for a full recharge from a Westinghouse iGen4500 running at 120 V × 26 A = 3.12 kW — depending on the Rivian pack size and the truck’s kWh/mi efficiency. This is an estimate based on the iGen4500’s published tank/runtime and reasonable EV efficiency assumptions.

It is important for us to maintain our ability to identify retarded answers provided by AI. Once we lose that ability, we are in trouble.

I currently have five of them battling it out:

Compare these answers from different AIs, and explain why they vary so much. Cross check them and find where they are right or wrong. The original question was this: "I used westinghouse igen4500 to charge a Rivian R1T large pack off road adventure trim. What is the effective MPG? I set it at 120v and 26a"

This is the way.

Just to be clear, I wasn't referring to *your* question specifically @SwampNut, I was commenting on the way I perceive AI is being used by the vast majority of people.

I appreciate that, and understood. It's worth reminding people. I'm deeply involved in a particular medical issue and medicine, and constantly run into people fucking themselves up from ChatGPT advice.

This is amusing on many levels, from the opportunity to experiment with a charging challenge, to pitting AI vs AI.

Copilot is so damn stupid. But we know that. It says this (all the others are in a reasonable range):
Short answer: About 40–55 MPG equivalent for a full recharge from a Westinghouse iGen4500 running at 120 V × 26 A = 3.12 kW — depending on the Rivian pack size and the truck’s kWh/mi efficiency. This is an estimate based on the iGen4500’s published tank/runtime and reasonable EV efficiency assumptions.
Back to the real world, Grok and Perplexity gave rational answers that hovered around 14-18 MPG. However they used different assumed numbers to get there. Gemini is not as shitty as Copilot, but shitty. It crashed out twice, then gave 11 MPG, and fucked up base assumptions. ChatGPT was also somewhat crazy at 24 MPG. I had a friend run it in GPT6 on a 56 megawatt cluster, using more electricity than it would take to charge the truck for a year, and it said 16 MPG. Ok, so we have three rational answers. My gut all along was "close to 18" based on just having read the manual, showing usage at full load, and intuitive math in my head.

Here's my non-AI math...

Full load usage is 0.5 GPH, at 3700w.

Official spec charts put my 3120 load at 0.43 GPH.

The car reported an actual 3kW going into the battery.

The miles per kWh is highly variable, since the speed and configuration of the truck can vary so much. Generally, 2.0 to 2.3 miles per kWh for Rivians. For me, I mostly get 2.1, and will use that.

SSOOOOOOOOOOO....

15 MPG. Pretty bad. Fun experiment.

I'll post up some of the AI answers, which include things like the losses for running the generator at high load (they estimated it themselves, I can't find that documented), and some other things that could be useful or wrong. We know it's assuming too much loss on the converter loss into the car.

If I get really motivated I could measure some fuel into it, and run it till it stops, then see what the car reports as the accepted charge. Actually that's pretty easy, other than my gas can is empty.

And this is the top reason why I hate all of this "AI" crap. I really, really hate this timeline.
