G2 Here with a brand new heat pump. Haven't noticed a difference from original (aka updated heat pump technology) if i keep it at 70 not horribly lound. Set it to hi temp and yes very loud. Going to be -20F next 3 days. Excited to see how well it keeps up.

Gen 1 doesn't have a heat pump. AC only. Heat pumps have to work pretty hard when there is a significant temperature delta.
Yes I realize that. More reason that I love my Gen 1. Listening to that would drive me over the edge.

That assumes you have natural gas. Quite a few areas have very expensive heating oil so a cold weather heat pump saves a lot of money.
also, Nat Gas prices are adjusted with weather - currently in the middle US as we are headed towards record cold tonight, prices are spiking. :(

no = preorder R2
yes = preorder Volvo
Do you want a heat pump? Or just don't want the R1 heat-pump?

I would assume R2 has the pump and it will be sized a bit smaller to better suit the smaller vehicle. Hopefully runs smoother too. Should only be better than the R1.

Otherwise god speed with the Volvo.

OK, I want to be clear about my future choices. I don’t have a problem with a heat pump. I had one in my model 3. However, it needs to be whisper quit like my model 3.
All they have to do is hire the guy that designed the M3 system and bob's your uncle.

I don’t want the shitty loud heat pump.

Or reverse engineer m3 heat pump and copy design.

Tesla sales gal called me yesterday and said they had some great deals on the model Y. I told her sorry I can’t drive Tesla‘s anymore. She was very polite and thanked me for my time. I almost felt bad

Apparently if you design an electric motor assembly well enough, you can minimize or counteract the vibrations that cause noise.

We have two exterior heat pumps for our house's heating systems. The 2018 heat pump model (rated for temperate environments) is moderately noisy. The 2025 heat pump model (different manufacturer, rated for very cold environments) is very quiet.

If the R1 Gen 2 heat pump otherwise works well, Rivian may have had enough time to design a less noisy but equally effective successor. We will see....

Best wishes!
