Warranty replacements don't extend the initial warranty period, but it doesn't clear it either. If you are in the initial 3yr. 36k then the warranty is still in play. Once you buy the battery, there is a 2 year warranty on it.
Ridiculous that I will be on my 3rd battery in 2.5 years. Seems that everyone who has had battery replacement keep needing them replaced. Seems like a defect to me. The car has 40k miles on it so it is 100% driven.

Same for me ... I just got a call 15 min ago telling me that they want to replace my 12V. This will be my 3rd 12V battery in 32 months. Hopefully Rivian is charging back the 12V supplier for this issue!!

Yikes!

FWIW- I just replaced the original tiny little 12V battery in our 2017 BMW i3, it lasted 8+ years. It's the same type AGM battery as the R1's use, it's just slightly higher capacity- the R1 battery is 18Ah, the BMW battery is 20Ah. It was a pretty easy job to replace it, about an hour in total. Cost from the OEM supplier directly (not from BMW) was $149.

Well, there are at least a few of us with deliveries in 2022 w/o replacement. Fingers now crossed!
I’m a June 2022 delivery with the original batteries. I asked a friend who works for a Rivian SC what advice he had, and he said the monitoring in the truck was good now, and it would notify me…fingers crossed!

38k on my FEB 2023 R1T and it still has original dual 12V batteries. Hoping I get ample warning before either of them decides to die.

When they replaced my 12V the second time they also replaced a couple of other modules - I think they determined that I had some other issues that was causing the 12V issue. Took them over two weeks (some of which was waiting on parts) and I really hope I'm good for a couple of years.

I missed call from SC today, but they went ahead and confirmed appointment.

I was going to hold off sharing info below, but based on what you said I see connection and opportunity for further conversations with SC when I drop off next week.

What I learned today: After chatting briefly with someone with connection inside... They can monitor things like resistance of wiring. And they are aware there was a supplier/manufacturing problem with early ECU boards where a screw did not have the correct tolerance, which could create contact with something else and cause a short, or sudden over-voltage. They are not sure exactly which batch, so they wrote software to monitor for that sudden over-voltage and flag.

Not saying this is the reason for my case, or anyone else's. But it could be.

That last bit is super interesting and illustrates a benefit of vehicles receiving software updates. In the old days you’d either replace them all or just wait for them to fail and hope the customer isn’t too upset to buy another.

And if it was a legacy auto's EV, they wouldn't write software on the fly to monitor a potential problem. They'd just kick the can down the road for development on next-gen.

I'm watching this thread as I'm on the original 12V battery in a Sep 2023 Gen 1 R1S (49,000 miles). I've been wondering when it's time to go in for a preventative replacement.

For those of you above that mentioned a battery health check, could you please elaborate on the software you are using to see this? It sounds very useful.
Mine is a 9/23 R1S. It had a dead battery replacement in 2024. Then in 2025 Rivian contacted me wanting to replace that battery. I told them I just got a new battery and all was well but they insisted on replacing the battery again. Mobile service came out to the office and swapped the battery in about 15 minutes.

They've had plenty of practice by now...

I really want a vin breakout of who has had a 12v failure, who has had a failure with other work done, who has had a 12v proactive replacement, who has had a proactive replace with other work done, who is on the original batteries. I know Rivian probably has someone with a full time job looking at it, but they sure won’t let me see it. Although I only care about it to see where I am on the venn diagram of vin numbers, i know only the fact that I am still on original duals from late 2022.

Nothing, replacement 1 was due to software conditions of 12v this is the campaign Rivian had. Then my current one “the replacement” I have no clue. Drive the truck all the time. I suspect it’s related to them not calibrating the replacement battery. I learned that if they don’t calibrate the car with the replacement battery they fail in 12 months. This was per Rivian lead service manager.

it is strange though that everyone having multiple replacements is in the recall campaign group.
