I am curious to see what the difference is between the old and new. I have one of the early ones and it gets pretty loud. I don't have any response/connect issues. Also I didn't realize they had different colors of them. Mine is very dark. I guess it makes sense if the interiors are different.

The maximum static (parked) weight load for the crossbars is 780 lbs. The maximum dynamic (driving) weight load is 250 lbs. I imagine you would be fine if the weight is under this and you can secure it well. I hauled out portable bar on mine.

Altitude data depends on whether they are augmenting the readings with known map/terrain data. Easy to do for mapping systems in less remote areas where better tools were used to measure. But we have MapBox so I am sure that isn't the case ?
