I have a 40 amp charger on one 50 amp circuit in my garage. I also have a garage space heater on a different 50 amp circuit breaker. I want to add a 2nd charger to the garage. I was wondering if a toggle switch could be installed on the circuit with the space heater to select between energizing the space heater or the EVSE?

The only thing I found on an internet search are items like the one below. It did not fill me with confidence....... Anybody know if this a safe/feasible thing to do and what switch would be best to use?

Being an electrical engineer I alsways would chat with my go-to electrician about things like these. Always making sure everything was done to code. Might sound extra cautious, but when it came to warranties, issues or god forbid insurance cases, having it done right was worth it for me to spend a few extra bucks on it.
More than once he would surprise me with a simpler or better solution and also found several mistakes the prior contractor had done.

Not that I'd recommend the below, but it sure sounds like something that occupies many peoples' minds :)

Thanks for the inputs. For my application I have the heater in a work room and the EVSE would be 20 feet or so away in another room so I think the big Siemens safety switch is the way to go.

Hello all!
I installed this at our cabin:

https://simpleswitch.io/ev-charging/

I installed it downstream of our stove. In Canada that’s a 50 amp circuit so flow drops to 32 amps or so.
Works like a charm! Charges when plugged in and when someone uses the stove I get the notification that charging has stopped. Then it continues later on.

Look at neocharge smart switch for automatic use, mine works great. Cheaper than the 2nd option above, too.
This is what I was looking into for the same application...sharing a circuit with a heater and EVSE, but I still haven't bothered and just swap plugs when needed.

I'd move to something like the Neocharge over swapping plugs. Those 240v plugs are designed to be plugged in and basically forgotten about. inserting and removing plugs causes slack in the plug and thus can lead to early wear on the plug. This then becomes a point of resistance (heat) and can lead to a fire.

A friend uses a basic splitter to charge his Tesla from the dryer outlet, and have the dryer plugged in. He just doesn't use both at once. Car charges only after he's in bed. Do you leave the heater on all the time? If not, just put a splitter on it and be done.
